"Rough destiny" or "Meng ying" 命硬

In traditional Chinese society, there is a saying of "meng ying 命硬". It literally means as "hard or rough destiny".

For examples, after someone has married, his or her spouse died unexpectedly soon after OR a new baby was born and his parents soon suffered major misfortune or even death. Consequently, this person or baby lives a miserable and lonely life. People may comment the person or baby involved as "meng ying". This implicitly accuses the person and baby "jinxing" their close relatives and themselves.

Another scenario would be: you may find some old people survive through wars, famines, severe illness/ injuries and misfortune, their family members are mostly dead, yet they still are alive but alone and may be even in destitute. Due to improvement of social welfare in modern societies, a modern version would be the same old people survive alone in institutions when all or most of their family members have died.

A more colloquial use of "meng ying" is to describe someone who escapes major disaster like being the the lone survivor of an airplane crash or battalion during wartime.

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as "meng ying" in Bazi. The closest concept to "meng ying" is "strong daymaster with no support 身旺无依". This means a chart has a very strong daymaster (DM) with no wealth and power stars to drain it (but failing to become a special profile chart). This chart type usually associated with monk/nun/ Daoist or clergy people in traditional society and poor/ destitute people in modern society

CHARACTERISTICS OF "ROUGH DESTINY" CHART

1. The daymaster has relatively indomitable survival ability or "unsinkable"-- hard to die. S/he suffers frequent setbacks and misfortunes, but s/he usually can overcome or escape from death in catastrophes.

2. It implies "jinx", especially "loneliness jinx", jinxing self, parents and family members. DM is also likely a loner in nature. The "loneliness" here refers to the lacking of family relationship because DM's family members are either dead or separated.

There are two types of "rough destiny":

a. Solitary rough destiny (孤独命硬): This is the "strong daymaster with no support 身旺无依" type mentioned above. Summary meaning is: being poor and alone and likely with longevity.

b. Prosperous rough destiny (富贵命硬): This also has a strong DM chart but with good structure and/ or favorable luck periods. DM is alone eventually (jinxing family members) but s/he enjoys wealth and fame/ power with big ups and down in life. China's late Chairman Mao is an example of this type.

Identify lazy people using only their birthday 懒人八字

Most people prefer not partner with or hiring lazy persons. This article discusses how to identify lazy people using only their date of birth with Chinese Bazi astrology. No probation or trial period needed.

BAZI CHART CHARACTERISTICS OF LAZY PERSONS

Chart with 3 or more resource stars (zheng-yin/ pian-yin): Resource stars represent senior generations, parental help, blessing and academic credentials. Chart with strong resource stars implies the chart owner ("daymaster", DM) is likely getting the blessing and support from his/ her seniors. S/he is prone to become dependent, lacking motivation to achieve more, conservative, traditional and physically weak. If annual luck comes another resource star, s/he is likely to be lazy and happy to keep "business as usual" and resistant to change.

Chart has NO wealth stars (zheng-cai/ pian-cai): In Bazi, wealth stars represent desires, abilities and persistence for goal attainment. People with no wealth star in their chart lacks motivation, willingness to work towards goals and look down on material gains and interests. This is like an engine without power and not moving much.

Chart with 3 or more -output stars (shi-shen): -Output star represents talent and enjoying life. People with strong -output stars in their chart thinks too much, fantasizes a lot but does little. They like enjoying life and good food. Many of them have big belly with a plump body. They are sloppy and careless at work and daily lives. This situation is especially worse if their chart has no wealth star. DM will fantasizes more and withdraw when running into difficulty.

The above situations are not absolute. We need to look at the whole natal chart to determine if this person is indeed a lazy one. For example, if a chart with excess resource stars but has at least one wealth star to control them, DM's laziness will be under control. Similar logic and interpretation for excess -output stars when resource star is presented in the chart.

Human laziness can be positive. People who are lazy but with a sense of responsibility would invent or create new methods or tools to make do things and tasks faster, so they can be "lazy" but still get the jobs done.

"Excess Code" in Bazi “多”字诀

The "Excess Code" in Bazi summarizes the potential consequence of an excessive transformation star or "10-gods" in a Bazi chart. "Excess" means three or more of a certain star showing up in a chart.

Below is the code:

财多愚，才多劳；

Excessive -wealth (pian-cai) = stupidity
Excessive +wealth (zheng-cai) = working hard for money

官多贱，杀多死；

Excessive +power (zheng-guan) = humble/low life
Excessive -power (qi-sha) = illness, injury or even death

印多孤，枭多凶；

Excessive +resource (zheng-zin) = loneliness/ alone
Excessive -resource (pian-zin) = ominous

食多愁，伤多害；

Excessive -output (shi-shen) = worrisome
Excessive +output (shang-guan) = troublesome/ harmful

刃多残，劫多败，

Excessive yang-knife/ -peer (jie-cai) = disability/ handicap
Excessive +peer (bi-jian) = failures

禄多贫；马多奔波，

Excessive +peer (bi-jian) = poverty
Excessive travelling horses (yin, shen, si or hai) = running about, toiling

冲多不安，合多热情；

Excessive clashes = instability, insecurity
Excessive combinations = warmth, passionate, sociable

阳多坦荡，阴多深沉；

More yang than yin pillars = open, honest and non-calculative
More yin than yang pillars = sullen and introvert personality

墓库多克六亲。

Numerous tombs/storages (chen, xu, chou and wei) = jinxing close relatives

Like most codes in Bazi and Feng Shui, this code does NOT give the context or conditions for application. But it is not difficult to figure out because there are likely only two possibilities-- whether the star is favorable or not favorable.

Detecting mean woman from her birthday 泼妇八字

This article lists the Bazi characteristics of mean or difficult woman. Chinese uses "pōfù" (泼妇) or "fierce and unreasonable woman" to denote this type of woman. The closest English word to match this Chinese word is "bitch". The contents here do not mean for strong and/ or career women.

This article enables you to check if someone is a mean woman by using her birthday without meeting her. This is helpful in making hiring, partnership or dating decisions.

BAZI CHARACTERISTICS OF MEAN WOMAN

1. Chart with strong +output star (shang-guan) in both stem and branch levels:

Jia-wood daymaster with strong Ding-fire
Yi-wood daymaster with strong Bing-fire
Bing-fire daymaster with strong Ji-earth
Ding-fire daymaster with strong Wu-earth
Wu-earth daymaster with strong Xin-metal

Jia-wood daymaster with Mao-wood in any branch
Yi-wood daymaster with Yin-wood in any branch
Bing-fire daymaster with Wu-fire in any branch
Ding-fire daymaster with Si-fire in any branch
Wu-earth daymaster with Wu-fire in any branch

Woman with yang-knife in her chart has strong individuality/ personality. If this yang-knife is penalized or clashed, she is even more bitchy, confrontative and resistant. If chart has yang-knife, -power (qi-sha) and -resource (pian-yin), this woman is calculative, arbitrary and very difficult to interact with.

3. Chart with mixing of + and - power stars (guan-sha mixing up) and DM is strong:

Jia- or yi-wood daymaster with Geng-metal and Xin-metal in stem level and Yin-wood and Mao-wood in branch level. Birth month is Yin, Mao, Hai or Zi.
Bing- or Ding-fire daymaster with Ren-water and Gui-water in stem level and Si-fire and Wu-fire in branch level. Birth month is Yin, Mao, Si or Wu.
Wu- or Ji-earth daymaster with Jia-wood and Yi-wood in stem level and Chen-, Wei-, Xu-, Chou-earth, Si-fire and Wu-fire in branch level. Birth month is Chen, Wei, Xu, or Chou.
Geng- or Xin-metal daymaster with Bing-fire and Ding-fire in stem level and Shen-metal and You-metal in branch level. Birth month is Chen, Shen, You, Xu or Chou.
Ren- or Gui-water daymaster with Wu-earth and Ji-earth in stem level and Hai-water and Zi-water in branch level. Birth month is Hai, Zi, Shen or You.

Woman with this "guan-sha mixing up" in her chart has no principle and plays tricks. It is difficult to get rid of her once she "attaches" to you.

4. Chart with numerous + and - peer stars (bi-jian/ jie-cai):

Jia- or yi-wood daymaster with numerous Jia-, Yi-, Yin- and Mao-wood
Bing- or Ding-fire daymaster with numerous Bing-, Ding-, Si- and Wu-fire
Wu- or Ji-earth daymaster with numerous Wu-, Ji-, Chen-, Xu-, Chou- and Wei-earth
Geng- or Xin-metal daymaster with numerous Geng-, Xin-, Shen- and You-metal
Ren- or Gui-water daymaster with numerous Ren-, Gui-, hai and Zi-water

Woman with numerous peer stars in her chart lacks reasoning, thinking/ planning, is impulsive and likes to do things rashly.

Don't get mad if your chart matches one or more of the above features. One should look at the WHOLE chart and not just the features above to determine DM is a mean person or not. Very often, the presence of certain star can turn these mean features into advantages. For example, a chart with numerous peer stars but also with at least a power star to keep peer star in check, DM can accomplish great feats.

Finally, women have no monopoly of being mean. Men could also be mean and hideous. But the male version of Bazi characteristics are different to certain extent.

Quick check of people with good temperament 速断好脾氣

Below is a quick way to identify people with good temperament based on the day of birth of their Bazi birth charts. This info is helpful when dating a new person, making a new friend/ partner or hiring a new employee.

Before we go further, please note that "good temperament" is NOT equal to "good personality". Although people with good personality are more likely to have good temperament. Good tempered people could also be cunning, deceitful, lazy, mean and etc..

4 TYPES OF DAY-PILLARS WITH GOOD TEMPERAMENT

1. Day-pillar with +power star (zheng-guan) at the branch (日支坐下正官): geng-wu, bing-zi, xin-si and ding-hai days.

2. Day-pillar with +resource star (zheng-yin) at the branch (日支坐下正印): jia-zi, ji-si, yi-hai and wu-wu days.

3. Day-pillar with -resource star (pian-yin) at the branch (日支坐下偏印): bing-yin, ding-mao, geng-chen, xin-chou, ren-shen and gui-you days.

4. Day-pillar with +wealth star (zheng-cai) at the branch (日支坐下正財): wu-zi, ren-wu, ji-hai and gui-si days.

3 TYPES OF DAY-PILLARS WITH GOOD TEMPERAMENT SOCIALLY BUT ARE RUDE/ IMPATIENT TO FAMILY MEMBERS

The following day pillars put up a facade of good temperament to outside world but are rude and even vicious to their own family members or people close to them .

1. Day-pillar with -power star (qi-sha) at the branch (日支坐下七殺): wu-yin, ji-mao, jia-shen, yi-you, ren-xu, ren-chen, gui-wei and gui-chou days.

2. Day-pillar with -wealth star (pian-cai) at the branch (日支坐下偏財): jia-xu, jia-chen, yi-chou, yi-wei, bing-shen, ding-you, geng-yin and xin-mao days.

3. Day-pillar with -output star (shi-shen) at the branch (日支坐下食神): bing-chen, bing-xu, ding-chou, wu-shen, ji-you, ren-yin, gui-mao and ding-wei days (these day-pillars are mostly impatient, anxious and not rude).

Please note that this is a "quick check" only. A more accurate reading should be reading the whole birth chart and not just the day branch.

Missing element/s and personality 五行命理解說

In previous article we have discussed what may happen when a chart has missing transformation stars or "10-gods". In this article we focus on the missing element in a Bazi chart.

According to Chinese cosmology, the world is formed with 5 basic elements or primal energies represented by water, wood, fire, earth and metal. Human destiny is determined by the interplay of this 5 basic energies. All living organisms survive under the natural rules and restrictions of 5-elements.

For the Chinese Daoists, the only way to achieving true freedom and immortality is to:

"Hop out of the 3 realms and live outside the boundary of 5-elements 跳出三界外，不在五行中". (Note: 三界 "3-realms" is triloka-- sensory, form and formless realms)

Whereas missing transformation star focuses primarily on the social and family aspect, missing elements are more onto the personality of the chart owner or daymaster.

People with a completed set of 5-elements in their birth charts are the relatively blessed group and have long life expectancy. They are likely to live a stable/ peaceful life with no major ups and downs (but not necessarily rich and famous). If they run into obstacles or setbacks, they are likely going through them without a scratch.

If one's chart has a weak or missing element, one is likely has some aspects of life missing or obstacles related to that element. Below are the meanings of missing a element in a chart

MEANINGS OF WEAK OR MISSING ELEMENT

1. Weak or missing water element: Water element is exemplified as ocean, sea, river, lake and stream in nature. Water stands for intelligence in Chinese metaphysics. Water flows downward and has no shape. It's form changes with the container holding it. When applying water nature to the personality of an individual with strong water, it implies s/he is smart, flexible, a quick learner, adaptive to changes and sociable. But s/he could be flowery, promiscuous and cunning if water is too strong. In contrary, one with weak or missing water element will be rigid, inflexible, having problems adapting to changes, lacking planning and not too smart.

2. Weak or missing wood element: Wood element is exemplified as trees, plants, grass and flowers in nature. Wood stands for kindness in Chinese metaphysics. Wood is solid and grows upward. When applying wood nature to the personality of an individual with strong wood, it implies s/he is upright, kind, moving forward and not a quitter. But s/he could be stubborn, cruel and inflexible if wood is too strong. In contrary, one with weak or missing wood element will be indecisive, unkind, lacking stamina and motivation to achieve goals, prone to withdrawal and lacking persistence.

3. Weak or missing fire element: Fire element is exemplified as the sun, moon, stars and flames in nature. Fire stands for courtesy in Chinese metaphysics. Fire or flame is "hollow" and burns upward. It is the strongest form of yang energy. When applying fire nature to the personality of an individual with strong fire, it implies s/he is polite, cultured, proactive, enthusiastic and cheerful. But s/he could be impatient and hot-tempered if fire is too strong. In contrary, one with weak or missing fire element will be a laggard, impolite, lazy, lacking enthusiasm and has problems achieving goals.

4. Weak or missing earth element: Earth element is exemplified as the field, plains, soil, sands, mountain and rocks in nature. Earth stands for trust/ faith in Chinese metaphysics. Earth is stable and gives rise to "everything" ("mother earth" gives rise to plants/ metal and etc.). When applying earth nature to the personality of an individual with strong earth, it implies s/he is trustworthy, keeping promise, honest, reliable, inclusive, reputable and stable. But s/he could be inflexible and rigid if earth is too strong. In contrary, one with weak or missing earth element will be lacking credibility/ trust and impulsive.

5. Weak or missing metal element: Metal element is exemplified as the metal ores and precious stones in nature. Metal stands for righteousness in Chinese metaphysics. Metal is rough and tough. When applying metal nature to the personality of an individual with strong metal, it implies s/he is full of righteousness, authoritative, loyalty, fighting injustice, not hesitating to take action against evils/ criminals, can achieve major feats and is leadership material. But s/he could be rigid and vengeful if metal is too strong. In contrary, one with weak or missing metal element will be lacking authority, indecisive and worrying too much.

In conclusion, a weak or missing element in a chart can release critical social, familial and personality data of the daymaster or chart-owner. This info is very useful for looking for friendship, dating and business partners.

Secret of Mind-reading in Bazi

It is not unusual to see a Bazi reader taking a quick glance of a Bazi natal chart and spelling out some characteristics and life events of the client without thinking. Is this Bazi reader a mind-reader?

The trick is to memorize the simple info below.

In general, when a client chart has numerous or none of a certain 10 transformation stars ("10-gods"), some deductions or generalizations can be made about this client.

When a chart 命局 has numerous ("numerous" means 3 or more):

+wealth (zheng-cai)-- likely a stupid person 财多愚
-wealth (pian-cai)-- likely working hard for money 才多劳
+power (zheng-guan)-- likely a lower class or humble person 官多贱
-power (qi-sha)-- likely dies prematurely or tragically 杀多死
+resource (zheng-yin)-- likely alone (widow/ widower/ orphan etc.) 印多孤
-resource (pian-yin)-- likely a vicious/treacherous person 枭多凶
+output (shang-guan) -- likely a provocative or challenging person 伤多害
-output (shi-shen) -- worries too much 食多愁
yang-ren (knives)-- likely has disability/ handicap 刃多残
+peer (jie-cai)-- encounters more failures than successes 劫多败
-Luk (-peer, bi-jian) likely living in poverty 禄多贫
traveling horses (yin, shen, si, hai)-- running around hectic working 马多奔波
clashes -- unstable/ insecure life 冲多不安
combinations-- a sociable an enthusiastic person 合多热情
yang pillars-- an open-minded and frank person with no hidden agenda 阳多坦荡
yin pillars-- a sullen and calculated person 阴多深沉
tombs/storages-- jinxing close relatives 墓库多克六亲，

When a chart does not have a certain transformation star, it also has similar predictions made above except in different directions. You may find out the details in my Bazi discussion group.

Caution: You need to read the whole chart to ascertain if the above pointers fit the person. The demeaner, attitude, physical appearance and clothing style could also give hints if this straight deduction based on 10 transformation stars applies or not. Another precaution is that special chart may not work with the above deductions. For example, it is quite common for special profile charts with 3+ of the same stars. So the above is likely not applicable.

Are you suitable to date a cougar or older woman? 姐弟恋

Men with certain personality characteristics can handle older women as lovers or wives better than others. Most of these specific personalty traits are innate or born with. By checking the natal chart of a man, we can predict if he is a better candidate to date or marry older woman or "cougar".

Below are the Bazi characteristics of men for dating older women. Please check the personality section of your Bazi books or ask your teacher for explanation.

(Daymaster or DM below means the man in question)

1. Daymaster (DM) sits on -power star (qi-sha)
People with the following day-pillars sit on -power star: Yi-you, Wu-yin, JI-mao, Ren-xu, Gui-wei and Gui-chou.

2. DM sits on +power star (zheng-guan)
People with the following day-pillars sit on +power star: Bing-zi, Ding-hai, Geng-wu and Xin-si.

3. DM sits on +resource star (zheng-yin)
People with the following day-pillar sit on +resource star: Ji-zi, Yi-hai, Wu-wu and Ji-si.

4. DM sits on -resource star (pian-yin)
People with the following day-pillar sit on -resource star: Bing-Yin, Ding-mao, Geng-chen, Geng-xu, Xin-wei, Xin-chou, Ren-shen and Gui-you.

5. DM combines with a nearby stem
Below are the two types of DM combinations

a. Yang DM combines with wealth element (zheng-cai) sitting in month or hour pillar:

Jia-wood DM combines with Ji-earth
Bing-fire DM combines with Xin-metal
Wu-earth DM combines with Gui-water
Geng-metal DM combines with Yi-wood
Ren-water DM combines with Ding-fire

b. Yin DM combines with power element (zheng-guan) sitting in month or hour pillar:

Yi-wood DM combines with Geng-metal
Ding-fire DM combines with Ren-water
Ji-earth DM combines with Jia-wood
Xin-metal DM combines with Bing-fire
Gui-water DM combines with Wu-earth

Bazi characteristics of "strong" women

"Strong" here is the politically correct way of saying "bitches/ shrews" or women that overwhelm both "average" men and woman.

CHARACTERISTICS OF "STRONG" WOMEN

Over-strong output stars (食伤星太强 shang-guan/ shi-shen)
Day-stem daymaster (DM, the person) sits on -power star (qi-sha) or yang-knife (日坐七杀或阳刃)
Strong DM with "mixing of guan-sha" (mixing of zheng-guan and qi-sha 身强官杀混杂)
Chart with numerous +peer stars (jie-cai 劫财重重)

Please check your Bazi books for explanations or take my Bazi courses like "4P-Bootcamp" listed below.

You probably want to stay away from women with with 2+ of the above characteristics in their Bazi charts-- unless you like to serve/ follow order or you have pleasant personality and can put up with any craps.

Actually, male charts with #1, 2 and 3 above are equally "strong".

12 Worrisome Birth Months of Chinese Zodiac Animals 属相十二愁月

In Chinese astrology, everyone is assigned an animal sign from a pool of 12 animals based on the birth year. This article discloses a rarely taught secret of "12 worrisome birth months".

People who were born in their "worrisome month" of their own specific birth animal sign likely to have the following characteristics:

Personality: worrisome, gloomy, grumpy, down, pessimistic and feel disaster coming anytime, self-defeatist, "shooting oneself in the foot" type.

Life chances and social interactions: not getting along with neighbors and family relatives, loner and quiet type, lacking friends, marital problems and career problems.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR WORRISOME MONTH
Worrisome month is calculate in terms of solar months (it is about a month slower than western month). The easiest way to calculate it is to use the bazi-calculator link below, key in your birthday and check the left side table as shown below:

The example below is to check someone with December 4, 1980 birthday was born in his worrisome month or not. The birth animal sign is monkey for the person and birth month is pig or hai.

Then we check the list of worrisome month in terms of birth animal sign below. The worrisome month for monkey sign is pig or hai month. Hence this person was born in a worrisome month (potential client for psychologist).

The followings are worrisome months based on Chinese zodiac animal signs:
