Old people and cats in China

Despite the Chinese are notorious for eating anything that moves, cats are luckier than dogs because they are not as popular as dog cuisine (except in Vietnam).  Cats are more popular in China for old people because they are easier to care for than dogs.

Below are pictures collected from Chinese websites showing the happiness and sadness of old people with their cats.  Click picture to enlarge image.

Ken Lai's Minimalist Feng Shui Guide for Home Buying

This minimalist Feng Shui guide is for the ultra lazy (and/ or busy or cheap) people.  The goal is not to maximize good Feng Shui but to avoid bad Feng Shui when buying a house.  If you can avoid the following 3 Feng Shui problems, your new home Feng Shui should be at least "livable" with no major problem.

1.  Do NOT buy a house with main door facing a T-junction or reversed bow-shaped road.
A house sits at the intersection of a T-junction-- this dash of energy or "sha-qi" will disrupt the energy field of the house negatively.  It may cause accidental death or severe sickness like cancer for the residents.  It also causes dwindling luck, shrinking family size and legal problems.

2.  Do NOT buy a house with northwest corner missing.  Northwest sector represents the oldest male or bread-winner of the house.  Missing NW corner will affect his luck and well-being.  He could die prematurely and does not like staying at home.  Single woman will have problem keeping a man in this house.

3.  Do NOT buy a house with toilet in center of house.  House center is like the heart of a house-- put a toilet there is like polluting its heart.  It will affect the health of the residents, like acute sickness leading to death.

Likewise, a toilet in the NW section is also bad for the oldest male resident of the house.  Woman of this house will have relationship problem or cannot keep a man.  She "flushes" away her relationship whenever using the toilet.

These 3 big Feng Shui "no-no" are proven again and again.  Don't laugh it off.

"Ken,  my house already have some of these problems.  Are there any remedies?"

Diamond Sutra vs. Diamond Drill

The blog title sounds like a Japanese monster movie.  It is actually about my adventures in a dental office.

I had a dental crown done a few months ago.  It was a two visits operation.  First visit to drill away parts of the worn out tooth, make some plastic molds to create a temporary crown and cap it on top of the tooth.  The process could be painful even with anesthesia.  The second visit is to replace the temporary crown with the final one, is not painful and done without anesthesia.

Yesterday I had another dental crown operation.  As usual, the dentist had given me an anesthesia shot and drilled my worn out tooth.  I still felt the pain, especially when the drill hitting some tooth nerves.  Suddenly a purple light flashed in my mind and I had recited a 4-lines gatha of the Diamond Sutra in Chinese in my mind.  In English, it will be:

"All conditioned phenomena
Are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow,
Like dew or a flash of lightning;
Thus we shall perceive them.”

My pain had disappeared while the dentist was still drilling happily.

Diamond Sutra is about non-abiding and non-attachment and that everything in life is an illusion.  I interpret that pain is also an illusion and thus should not be painful.

"Ken, this cannot prove the Sutra had worked its magic.  You had an anesthesia shot."

Well, I agree totally.  So I had done an experiment...

It was over an hour after a few plastic molds were done and the effect of anesthesia was 95%+ gone.  It came to the final installation of the temporary crown which requires some more drilling to fit.  The dentist had asked me if I want another anesthesia shot.

"No."  I manned up and replied.

I had regretted it within 30 seconds.

The dentist had drilled like there is no tomorrow.  It was so painful that I had almost levitated over the dental operation chair.  I knew the anesthesia had left me alone.

The moment of truth came--- I kept reciting the above 4-lines gatha of Diamond Sutra in my mind.  The pain was almost gone even the dentist was still drilling.  I still felt a little pain but it did not bother me physically.

You may try this trick next time when you run into painful or dangerous situation.

Saving 8 puppies

Surprisingly, in China, the most dangerous place for homeless dogs are post-secondary schools or universities.  Students are usually friendly to homeless dogs straying into the campus.  It is the university security that is hazardous to dog lives.  News of homeless dogs clubbed to death in university campuses show up in the internet are seen frequently.  But nothing is more horrific than the following one.

In the afternoon of last Sept. 22, the security people of China's Lan-zhou Finance University(蘭州財經大學) had buried alive a batch of 8 puppies on campus lawn.  Students there heard the loud barking of mother dog and saw a few security people patching up the lawn with new grass.  There are incidents of dogs being buried before.  They connected the dots and figured out what was going on.  A few witnesses told them some puppies were buried alive.

Ignoring the yelling of security people, 10+ students dug up the newly covered hole with their bare hands, spades and wooden planks.  They had managed to save 7 puppies.  One was missing and maybe buried too deep into the ground.

The students put the mother dog and puppies in a hidden place.

Pictures of this rescue were posted on China's microblog and gone viral.  Many news agencies have published this horrific action.   Below are some responses in Chinese.

"This is too much!  You can drive the dogs away or even kick them away...... Bury alive?  These people should be dead!.... Dog is also a life too....."    "Homeless dogs are also dogs... are also lives.  This is too cruel!".

But some people worry about security, "Who will be responsible if students are bitten?"  "This is a pity, but how to solve the security problem?"  Some even question the humane action of the students, "You dug the puppies out but not raise them.  Is this creating bad karma too?"

According to the Chinese version of "Book of Death", when people died, their souls need to go through a serious of obstacles before reaching the underworld court for judgement.  One of these obstacles is the "Hunger Dog Ridge."   This ridge is stationed with many vicious and hungry dogs. They will bite off passing souls' body parts, especially those who had mistreated and eaten dogs during their lifetime.  Those who love dogs will go through unscratched.

Let's thank the students for saving these puppies.

Mom carries arthritic golden retriever to exercise

A few days ago a Taiwanese group "Golden Retriever Union" has shared 3 photos in their Facebook page.  These photos show a slim woman carries a 40+ kg golden retriever on her back to walk the dog.  The dog is too old to walk up and downstairs of her home.  Many netizens are touched and cried.

Niu-niu, which means "little girl" in Chinese, is a 13 years old golden retriever.  She is a 93 years old woman in human terms.  She has problems in her back legs.

Miss Tian, the owner was interviewed by a TV station, "Niu-niu is like a family member."  Said Tian.  " She is getting old and cannot walk.  Let me carry her on my back then  年紀大了，走不動就讓我來揹.

Miss Tian carries the dog from her home to open areas.  So that Niu-niu can have some exercises even though she lays down pretty quick after a few ball catching-- her favorite game.

As to Niu-niu's future, "I have not really thought about how to handle her future.  We will talk about it when the day comes.  I will continue to carry her everyday.  This may be called a sweet burden"其實也沒有想過以後要怎麼辦，走到那一天再說吧！

Miss Tian herself weighs no more than 60kg.  The 40kg dog weight almost crooked her back.

Within days, most Chinese news agencies have carried this "old dog and woman" news.  Below is the link to see Niu-niu doing exercise:

Our animal shelters will be less full if more people are as kind as Miss Tian.

You can also cultivate good Feng Shui and karma by being kind to animals.

Extreme Feng Shui: Mr. Yang Greens the Mountain

Last March I wrote about local officials in China tried to fake reforestation results by painting barren hills and cemeteries green.  This time we have a case of extreme Feng Shui.

Recently the villagers of Gan Shui Town of Qijiang suburban county in Chongqing municipality 重慶綦江區趕水鎮 see some painters spraying paint on a nearby white cliff.  They have painted the white cliff surface with green paint for over a week.  The painted surface area is over 2000 square meters.  The result is an ugly green cliff that does not match the color of the natural vegetation of the mountain.

A TV reporter has located the person who has bankrolled this strange paint job--- Mr. Yang. Yang lives in a house near the cliff.

Of course, the first question the reporter asked is: "Why do you paint the cliff green?"

"The white cliff affects the Feng Shui of my house.  Isn't the cliff look great with the new paint?"  Answered Mr. Yang.

"Who has authorized you to paint the cliff?" The reporter asked.

"It is just a thought".  Mr. Yang tried to avoid answering by sidetracking.

Local residents are unhappy with the "green" cliff.  They prefer the natural white color.

I think Mr. Yang is really smart.  It is more economical to paint the cliff green than "moving" the mountain away.  This had been done before as recorded in a traditional Chinese fable about "Mr. Stupid moves the mountain愚公移山".  Mr. Stupid had sworn that he and his descendents would work to remove a mountain because it blocked his house.  Chairman Mao had used this fable to motivate Chinese citizens to do anything regardless of costs involved.  Modern CCP teaching is more practical-- Mr. Stupid should have moved his house and not the mountain.

Should Mr. Yang heed to the Party guideline by simply moving?

There are also Feng Shui techniques to change the orientation of his house and thereby reduce or eliminate the effects of the white cliff.

"CAPPING STEM" AND "CHOPPING BRANCH"

Note:  Below is a post for 4P-Bootcamp discussion list.

**********************************************************************

I am writing the course manual for "Applied 4P: Sickness Prediction and Prevention" now.  Today I have written "capping stem" and "chopping branch" and related sicknesses.  Here I show you the first part that are useful for standard 4P reading.

Ken

**********************************************************************

"CAPPING STEM" AND "CHOPPING BRANCH"

There are 10 stems and 12 branches which give rise to 60 different binomials.  A binomial consists of one stem and one branch of same polarity or gender.  The controlling and nurturing relationship between the stem and branch within a binomial is much more direct than between different pillars within a Bazi chart.   There are five possible relationship within a binomial:

1.      stem nurtures branch

2.      stem controls branch

3.      branch nurtures stem

4.      branch controls stem

5.      stem and branch parallel (same element)

The antagonistic relationship in #2 and #4 is called "capping stem and chopping branch"  盖头截脚 (gai-tou-jie-jiao, literally means "covering head and chopping leg".)

"Capping stem and chopping branch" (CSCB) is a mutual blocking situation or energy flow within a chart is blocked.  People with multiple CSCB in their charts are likely facing more obstacles and blockages in life and with numerous health issues.  They seldom finish or accomplish something without hitches or setbacks-- rarely do something right or get things done at first try.

CAPPING STEM

"Capping stem" is stem controlling branch within a binomial, for example,  bing-shen.  There are 12 "capping stem" binomials:

• Jia-chen 甲辰,  jia-xu 甲戌,
•  yi-chou 乙丑,  yi-wei 乙未,
• bing-shen 丙申, ding-you 丁酉,
• wu-zi 戊子,  ji-hai 己亥,
• geng-yin 庚寅,  xin-mao 辛卯,
•  ren-wu 壬午,  gui-si 癸巳.

People who have "capping stem" in their Bazi charts are prone to "bad beginning"  and  rarely succeed at first try when starting a project or function.

CHOPPING BRANCH

"Chopping branch" is branch controlling stem within a binomial, for example, jia-shen.  There are 12 "chopping branch" binomials:

• jia-shen 甲申,  yi-you 乙酉,
• bing-zi 丙子,  ding-hai 丁亥,
• wu-yin 戊寅,  ji-mao 己卯,
• geng-wu 庚午,  xin-si 辛巳,
• ren-chen 壬辰,  gui-chou 癸丑,
• gui-wei 癸未,  ren-xu 壬戌.

People who has "chopping branch" in their Bazi charts are prone to "ill-intended blockage or pressure" (by other party) in the middle of a project or function.
