Supercharge your kid's academic performance (Part 2) 读书风水2

Last week we have talked about academic positions based on 8-Mansions and Flying Star Feng Shui.  Now we will discuss academic positions based on the birth year stem of your kids.  This is a more personalized method of locating academic positions which does NOT change with time.

"Stems" and "branches" are the "ABC" of Chinese metaphysics.  There are 10 stems and 12 branches.  Most of us probably are familiar with "branches" because it also represents the 12 Chinese zodiac animals.  But in our case here, we look for the stem of the birth year.  Below is a simple method of finding out the birth year stem of your kid and the respective academic position:

For example, if your kid was born in 1991, check the table above for the row with "1", his birth year is "Xin" and his academic position is in the North.  Please note that birthday before February 4 is counted as previous year.  For instance, someone born in January 22, 1991 is considered born in 1990 based on the Chinese calendar.

Between the 3 methods of locating academic positions, which one is the best?  According to Feng Shui people, the best would be the one based on the house sitting/facing, followed by Flying Star method and  the personalized one.

It is not unusual to find your ideal location is occupied by a bathroom or kitchen or simply a missing corner.  You may use the second best location and so on.

Finally, avoid a house with bathroom in southeast sector because it is the academic location based on the Bagua or 8-Trigrams.  This is called "polluting Wen-chang".  Your kids will have problems in school.  You need to consult a Feng Shui practitioner to correct the problem.

Supercharge your kid's academic performance (Part 1) 读书风水1

With the current COVID-19 pandemic, most schools teach students through online learning.  Will your kids lose competitive advantages to other better equipped or smarter classmates?  Can you do something to enhance the learning capacity of your kids?

Feng Shui may help because there is an "academic position"  (Wen-chang 文昌)in Feng Shui.  Putting your kid in this position to do their study will enhance his/ her learning capacity and IQ.

There are more than three ways to locate this academic position in your home.  This article shows two first.  The article next week will disclose the third one and which method is more effective.

I.  ACADEMIC POSITION BASED ON HOUSE SITTING/FACING
This method is based on Bazhai or 8-Mansions Feng Shui.  First you need to figure out the "sitting" and "facing" directions of your home.

The main door of your house is the "facing direction".  The opposite side of your main door is the "sitting" of the house.  Below are the "academic position" (AP for short) of:
  1. Sitting North facing South, the AP is in NE
  2. Sitting South facing North, the AP is in South
  3. Sitting East facing West, the AP is in NW
  4. Sitting West facing East, the AP is in SW
  5. Sitting SE facing NW, the AP is SW
  6. Sitting NW facing SE, the AP is in East
  7. Sitting NE facing SW, the AP is in North
  8. Sitting SW facing NE, the AP is in West
II.  ACADEMIC POSITION BASED ON ANNUAL ACADEMIC STAR
This method is based on the Annual chart of Flying Star Feng Shui.  Find the location of annual 4-green star (best) or 1-water star and put your kid there to study to boost academic performance.  You may find a Flying Star calculator or following the following table to find the 4 and 1 star locations.   Remember these stars change location every year.

Part II of this post will show you a personalized academic position for your kid.  See you next time!

Feng Shui tips for making babies

This article assumes you are biological capable of producing a baby AND your Bazi birth chart shows you have children in your chart.  But for whatever reason, you have problem conceiving a baby.  Then we suspect it has something to do with your house Feng Shui.

Here are some Feng Shui tips to help you overcome this baby-making difficulty.

Feng Shui separates your house into 8 major sectors:  N, S, E, W, NE, SE, SW and NW.  Each direction handles some functions and representations.

North stands for water and reproductive system for Feng Shui.  When this sector has Feng Shui problem, the residents will likely have reproductive illnesses.  Hence the North sector of your house must have correct Feng Shui arrangement before you can make any baby.  (Free bonus here:  fix this sector if you have impotence or ED problem)

In Yi-jing ("Book of Changes"), young boy is represented by Gen trigram or NE sector.  Pre-heaven location of Gen is in NW and post-heaven location is in NE.  Hence, if you want a baby boy,  make sure the Feng Shui of NE and NW sector of your house are not messed up.  Otherwise, the boy born will be a weakling.  Gen is earth and NW is metal in nature.

Dui trigram or West represents young girl in Yi-jing.  Pre-heaven location of Dui is SE and post-heaven is West.  Hence, if you want a baby girl, you make sure this two sectors are clean and the appropriate Feng Shui setup, especially if you want a pretty girl.  SE is wood and West is metal in nature.

Before you fix the baby Feng Shui, fix the North side first because you need a working reproductive system before you can make babies.

"Ken, you have not told us what is appropriate Feng Shui for these sectors."

This is simple Bagua Feng Shui.  Consult your Feng Shui teacher or books for details.  Simply put, do not put things that clash the elemental nature of a specific sector.  For example, water is the elemental nature of North sector, avoid putting earth element there and put things that will strengthen water, especially if you have impotency problem  (please donate your saving in Viagra to charity).

Special Chinese New Year Bonus:  North, West and NW also stand for wealth and career luck.  SE stands for academic luck.  Fix up the Feng Shui in these sectors will also help procreation, wealth, career and academic progress.

Simple Health, Academic and Relationship Feng Shui

When one walks into a house, one could easily predict if the residents have health problems or not.  It sounds like magic but it is really simple after you have read this article.

In Feng Shui, a house can also represent the body of the residents.  A house is divided into 8 sectors along the Bagua or 8-trigrams theory.  Each sector represents certain family member and organ.  For example, northwest or Qian sector represents the father or oldest male of the house.  It also represents the head or lungs in a body.

We keep it simple here by focusing on the location of bathroom (toilet) and kitchen locations and its effect on the health and other aspects of the residents.

KITCHEN/ TOILET LOCATION AND RESIDENT HEALTH
According to Yi-Jing ("Book of Changes"), "Fortune and misfortune are attributable to movement.".  Kitchen and toilet have the most traffic or movements within a house.  So its location has significant effects on the well-being of the residents.

If kitchen or toilet is in the northwest side of a house, the oldest male or father of the house will have less luck or someone has headache or lung problem.  Northwest is the Qian trigram location and stands for father.

If kitchen or toilet is in the southwest side of a house, the oldest female or mother of the house is likely a weakling or someone has spleen or  stomach problems.  Southwest is the Kun trigram location and stands for mother.

If kitchen or toilet is in the east side of a house, the eldest son or 40+ years old male of the house is likely has mental problem or someone has liver or gallbladder problems.  Southwest is the Zhen trigram location and stands for eldest son.

If kitchen or toilet is in the southeast side of a house, the eldest daughter or 40+ years old female of the house may lack luck or someone has liver or gallbladder problems.  Southeast is the Xun trigram location and stands for eldest daughter.

If kitchen or toilet is in the north side of a house, the middle son or middle-age   male  of the house is likely having little or no luck or someone has kidney or urological problems.  Southwest is the Kan trigram location and stands for middle son.

If kitchen or toilet is in the south side of a house, the middle daughter or middle-age female of the house is likely having little or no luck or someone has heart or blood vessels problems.  South  is the Li  trigram location and stands for middle daughter.

If kitchen or toilet is in the northeast side of a house, the youngest son or young or teenage male of the house is likely having little or no luck or someone has stomach or spleen problems.  Southwest is the Gen trigram location and stands for youngest son.

If kitchen or toilet is in the west side of a house, the youngest daughter or young or teenage female of the house is likely having little or no luck or someone has respiratory problems.  Southwest is the Dui trigram location and stands for youngest daughter.

TOILET LOCATION,  ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND RELATIONSHIP

Toilet location may also affect the academic performance of your children.  Make sure the location representing your kid has no toilet.  Another precaution is the 4-academic star location of your house should have no toilet on it or the academic performance of the residents suffer.

For women live in a house with toilet in Qian (NW) sector of the house, they are likely have problem keeping a man in the house or the man has weak character and/or does not want to stay home.

2016 Simple Plant Feng Shui for Prosperity

2016 Annual Chart
2016 Year of Monkey will arrive in about 2 weeks.  The info below is some simple things that you can do with inexpensive plants to enhance the energy of your home and push up your academic, career, wealth and romance luck.

Below are the locations of various Feng Shui stars in 2016 and what to do:

4-jade-wood star stands for academic performance
-- Put 4 lucky bamboo plants in the west region of your house  or office to enhance academic performance.

8-white-earth wealth star
-- Put a plant with wide-rounded leaves in southwest to enhance wealth luck.

9-purple-fire star stands for celebration and romance
--   Put flowers with bright color in the east to enhance romance luck.  Make sure replacing the withered flowers or you may attract negative romance.  Remove the thorns if you put roses here.

1-white-water represents career and fame
-- Put a plant with wide-rounded leaves in southeast to enhance career and fame luck.

Precaution:
Make sure you water the plants.  Replace or remove the plant if it withers or dies.

Activation ceremony
While this is not compulsory, it will increase your chance of getting positive results from this Feng Shui enhancement.  Simply make a small donation to your local charity or food-shelves to activate the "flow of energies".  You need to "give" something (small donation) to "get" something (luck) in exchange.

"Coolest Tourist" or Feng Shui Hitchhiker?

China's Qing East Tombs (清东陵) is famous for its imperial tombs and auspicious Feng Shui. It was built in 1611 with 157 imperial family members including 5 emperors and 15 queens buried there.  It attracts many tourists and Feng Shui tour groups.
Qing East Tombs

In May 20, 2011,  a mysterious tourist went to a site parallel to the tomb of emperor Shunzhi (r. 1644-61),  dug a hole and attempted to bury the ash box of his deceased father there.

Tomb security people had stopped and arrested this man.  He told the security that he thought if he could bury his father's cremated ashes in this imperial tomb with auspicious Feng Shui,  he and his descendants will enjoy prosperity and good luck.

Other tourists called this man the "coolest tourist" while some netizens called him "Brother Superstition" (迷信哥).
A man dug a hole near Emperor Shunzhi's tomb

Brother Superstition was "criticized" and "educated" while in captivity.  He had admitted "guilt" on the spot and was released.  Apparently the Tomb Security authority thinks that being a laughing stock is a good enough punishment for this Feng Shui nut.  The news was broadcast on TV and newspapers across China.

Brother Superstition should come to the United States where the Bush family tombs are located.  It must have great Feng Shui because it has already produced two U.S. presidents and one governor.  But his problem is that cremated ashes do not give strong "resonance" to the descendants than burial remains (bones).  The descendants may become president's butlers or housemaids instead of presidents or governors.   It is also difficult to "hitch" a spot near the Bush family plot if he tries to get a big bag of bones into the ground.

According to many great Feng Shui legends, good Feng Shui (tomb and residential) is only part of the equation to riches and fame.  It takes many generations of cultivation and accumulation of  merits and virtues for a family to produce to a high ranking official like an emperor or president.

This has something to do with the idea of "Blessed people reside in blessed land" -- whether these blessed people are dead or alive.

Personality, luck and Feng Shui

In 2008, I had blogged about "Grandma's Tou-fu Dessert" and argued that luck is more important than Feng Shui.
http://kenlai.wordpress.com/2008/11/12/grandmas-tou-fu-dessert/

I was in Hong Kong last month and checked out Grandma's Tou-fu dessert again.  She still stays in the same location and as usual, there is a crowd in front of her store.  Her competition across the street was no longer there.  Of course, I had gulped down a few bowls of her tasty and smooth Tou-fu dessert.

Why Grandma does not open more Tou-fu stores?

I had also checked out the top secret green bean soup dessert location near Apliu street of Shum Shui Po district.  Apliu street is the location of Hong Kong's famous flea market for electronics.

A middle-aged woman that people called "Green Bean Lady" sells cups of green bean soup dessert near a pawn-shop on the pavement.  She has no storefront, not even a kiosk or cart.  She has the paper cups with dessert put inside a tin bucket and stands near the pawnshop's building pillar.

Old customer passing by will raise his hand  and she will give him a cup of green bean dessert.  She turns her head around frequently to see if any policeman is coming because she is not licensed to sell prepared food.  Strangers may think she is selling cracks.

She has the best tasting green bean dessert in Hong Kong.  Her "stand" is one of the "must-visit" when I return to Hong Kong.  I had asked her once how come her dessert is so tasty.  Her secret is using traditional stone cookware to prepare the green bean dessert with seaweeds.

(2025 update:  Grandma's Tou-Fu store still operates in the same location since early 2000 with crowds in front of the store. )

A few years ago, I had asked her, "You have a great product.  Why don't you open a shop to sell your green bean dessert and maybe eventually open many branches or do franchising and become filthy rich?"

Green Bean Lady just laughed her head off and replied, "Talk is easy!"

I should have brought Tony Robbins along to give her a motivational talk or simply threw her out from 20000 feet above the sky to build up her confidence.

I have estimated her income from this low profile selling is at best about the income of a laborer.

Obviously, Green Bean Lady is neither in good luck nor in bad luck.  She does not seem to be aggressive or eager to expand her "business".  In other words, her personality affects her risk-taking or business behaviors.

Besides social environment influences, one's personality is primarily "born with" or what we call "pre-heaven".  We may use astrological methods like 4P (Bazi) or ZWDS to analyze one's personality make-up.

Comparing Grandma of Grandma's Tou-fu to Green Bean Lady, we can see the effect of luck and probably personality on risk-taking.  Grandma takes the risk of renting a store and moves around when landlord raises her rent.  Green Bean Lady also sells but does not take the plunge of renting a storefront.  Her marketing style limits her business growth.  Grandma will probably accumulate a sizable wealth eventually.  Green Bean Lady is likely running in circles or staying in the same economic strata.
(Update:  Green Bean Lady had quitted business in around 2020)

What is the morale of this story?  Find a Bazi reader to read your 4P birth chart to see if you are in good luck period and have what it takes to run a business (or take my "4P Bootcamp" video course).

Can a cat override bad Feng Shui?

This is an amazing story about a stray cat and the firemen of a small fire station in an Asian city.

This small fire station has less than 10 firemen and is located at the edge of a cliff.  The back of the station is on the steep side of the cliff and hence it has  no "support mountain".  The front of the station faces a vertical boulder and a semi-circular road or "sickle sha" (in Feng Shui terms) cutting into the main entrance.  The layout of the building is like a stretched "U" with the right-hand side longer than the left side.

Feng Shui predictions for people of this station are:  major accident or injury happens at least once every 3- 6 years to member of  certain Chinese zodiac animal signs, high turnover, scandals, and bickering.

In reality,  people consider stationing in here is a "plum job" , like taking a vacation while working.  Working life here is peaceful and enjoyable.

The unusual feature of this fire station is that it has adopted a stray cat Mary despite the local belief that adopting a stray cat is inauspicious to one's wealth luck.

Firemen here do not know when this cat was adopted due to routine job rotations in the Fire Department.  They only know Mary was adopted over 10+ years ago.  So Mary should be 12- 14 years old or is equivalent to 70+ years old in human terms.

Everyone treats Mary as if she is the patron saint of the fire station.  They believe Mary protects them from major mishaps.  Even when a new boss takes over the station at regular intervals, he dares not remove Mary because the firemen may feel insecure.

Mary is the famous feline within the local fire department.

A few years ago, Mary was hit by a car and suffered massive injuries.  The firemen in the station believe that she took the "hit" for them.  They had raised about US$2000 among themselves for Mary's surgery.

When I saw Mary in this fire station, I put my hand over her head and felt her energy.  She looks like an earth-god or nymph or mountain god to me.

Does this cat override the bad Feng Shui of this fire station?  My answer can be "yes" and "no".  "Yes" because this cat may have supernatural power.  "No" because it is not really about the cat's power, whether supernatural or not.  It is about the kindness of the firemen adopting this stray cat and treat it like a god.  This collective kindness generates a huge positive energy that shields the firemen from negative Feng Shui energy.

What can you learn from this story?  Go to the "death row" of your local animal humane society and adopt a cat or dog. Death row cats or dogs are the one that no one wants to adopt due to their old age or physical characteristics.  This type of adoption is as good as saving a life and will  generate more positive energy around you.   This positive energy will shield you from misfortunes.

Feng Shui Secrets

The adage "Blessed land is resided by blessed people" ( 福地福人居) is well-known in Feng Shui circle.  It implies "blessed land" is invariably resided by "blessed people".  "Blessed land" means land with good Feng Shui.  "Blessed people" refers to two categories of people-- virtuous people with good luck or people who are currently in good luck.

The same adage with the subject and object reversed becomes "Blessed people reside in blessed land" ( 福人居福地).  The meaning differs greatly.  Here "blessed people" means strictly virtuous people.  The land in "blessed land" becomes "blessed" because "blessed people" reside on it.  In other words, blessed people influence or nurture the Feng Shui of the land on which they reside.

Most of the time, Feng Shui people over-emphasize the influence of Feng Shui (land) over residents and neglect that residents can also influence Feng Shui of the land energetically (spiritually) and physically.

I have written before about when to fire your Feng Shui master (when someone is in good luck period).  Here you may add if someone is virtuous or with strong positive energy (if you can sense energy), s/he can pick a house without the help a Feng Shui master.

In reality, most of us are neither "virtuous" nor always in good luck.  So you may want to find a house with good Feng Shui to nurture you or enhance your personal qi (energy).  Alternatively, you may take my "Destiny and Luck Management course" to enhance your luck energy with 4P and Feng Shui techniques.  With higher luck energy, you may improve your house hunting luck and other luck in general.

Feng Shui of the rotating circular buildings

Note:  This is an updated version of the original blog written in 2010 with certain identifying info removed.

There are rotating circular house videos and pictures floating around the web like this one:
http://www.treehugger.com/sustainable-product-design/seven-rotating-houses-and-towers-that-turn-our-crank.html

The biggest problem of doing Feng Shui for circular houses, especially rotating ones, is the determination of the sitting and facing of the house.

One way to have non-rotating door is to "hang" the donut-shaped house onto a cylindrical pillar that does not rotate-- like a mushroom.

"Mushroom" design has an disadvantage of seeing a wall upon entering the house-- not great for psychological well-being.  The "Form Feng Shui" implication for the residents will be "hitting obstacles wherever they go". Besides, energy or qi does not flow well with this design.

Some Feng Shui schools use the "yang-est" (brightest) side as facing. Determining the facing will be problematic a circular house has "360 degree view" or windows around its perimeter.

In addition, some rotating circular houses rotates one round within an hour or two, the qi or energies entering the house will be very mixed or simply neutralized each other out.

In terms of Form Feng Shui, circle stands for metal energy.  I have seen hospitals in Mexico, Singapore and some other countries are built into circular shape--  metal energy is good for doing surgery.  Residents whose energy profile like wood or wood in nature will suffer limp injury or traffic accidents. But it is good for professionals who are surgeons or doctors.

The probability having a spiral staircase in the middle of the house for mushroom-shaped house is pretty high.  This is another "Feng Shui hazard' in terms of Form Feng Shui.  It looks like a giant cork-screw twisting into the heart of the house.  The Feng Shui implication is certain person in the house will have higher probability of suffering heart problem or accident.

There are some positive features that one can derive from a rotating house.  For examples:

(note: all examples here require limiting rotating to 45 degrees once every 3 months or at most once a month)
  • arrange your bedroom sector or where one stays most of the time to sit on the current "timely" star of the year (eg. 8-white star) to enhance wealth luck
  • arrange your bedroom to sector that promotes health or recuperation
  • arrange your bedroom to 1-6-8 star locations to "make" a baby boy
The principle is simple-- always put your ass on the sectors with auspicious star combinations.

In short, a rotating house, especially the ones with a rotating door, is Feng Shui researchers' delight to do scientific experiments to verify various Feng Shui theories and claims.  We need someone like Bill Gates who would donate a few billions for Feng Shui enthusiasts to do experiments.

"Hi Ken, can you give some Feng Shui tips to the residents of rotating houses?"

The residents can rotate the house in such a way that the auspicious stars fall onto their bedrooms sectors and turn off the rotating motor in the evenings.  So the residents can absorb positive energies during their sleep instead of the aimless energy flows during the day.  They need to replace the spiral staircase with something non-spiral or tragedy is likely to happen within 6 years or no longer than 12 years.

You can learn more about Form Feng Shui in my "Advanced Visual Form Feng Shui" course.

"Hero kills corrupted officials! Coward kills kids"

8 kindergarteners are killed and over 20 are injured in China today (May 12, 2010).   Just within the last 30 days, there are over 5 incidents of school violence targeting mostly kindergarten and primary school students.  Most of the violences are committed by males with mental problems or grudges against authorities.  Children were stabbed or chopped with knives. Even the Chinese government has tight control on media report of school violence to prevent copycats, violence against small kids continues.

China's one-child policy aggravates the pain to the victim's parents.  The deceased children are likely the only child of the family.

People are demonstrated against these kid-killings.  They put out the banner, "Hero kills corrupted officials! Coward kills kids."  Some of the killers were embittered by corrupted officials or social injustice and resorted to killing defenseless kids to draw attention.

A banner put in front of a kindergarten even directs any potential killer to goverment office and not their school.

In terms of Chinese metaphysics, there are some startling coincidences about kid-killing in China.  Current year is Geng-yin (metal-tiger).  Geng-metal is knife or axe.  Yin is part of the Gen trigram (gua) in the 24 mountains.  Gen stands for young kids.  Annual star 6-white metal lands on the east (China).  "6" is Qian or older male. The whole imagery of a knife over a young kid happens in the east by an older male emerges.

Chinese government has ordered school officials to tighten security in the schools.

Extreme real estate marketing-- no more!

Last October I had written about a Hong Kong real estate developer who markets a 40 storeys buildings as an 88-storeys one by skipping certain "inauspicious floor numbers" (the 4s and 13) and pumping up the auspicious ones (the 8s).  The following link can refresh your memory:

http://kenlaifengshui.blogspot.com/2009/10/extreme-real-estate-marketing-with.html

In order to protect the gullible billionaires and wealthy pandas from China (who tend to buy expensive real estates), the Hong Kong Government has just issued the following new law regarding the labeling of floor numbers:
1.  no jumping or skipping of floor numbers (except below)
2.  only floor number with 4, 13 and last digit is 4 can be skipped.

The law will be effective from September 1, 2010.  This means a builder can only legally skip 4th, 13th, 14th or any number ending with 4, but not skipping any number starting with 4.   Therefore, new building with missing 40th to 49th floors will not be seen again after 9/1/2010.  Builders are out of luck to arbitarily skipping bad numbers or adding hot-selling floor numbers.

The number 4 sounds like "death" in Chinese.  Some "smart" masters think they can consider 4 as the academic and romance star used in the Flying Star system.  This may block the negative vibes or phobia-- hopefully.

Certain Feng Shui schools use floor number to calculate if a particular floor is "in luck" or matching the magnetic profile of the residents.  An "artificial" floor number probably will not cut it and requires the actual floor number to do the calculation.

PhD and migrant worker

I have read an interesting story from a Chinese website.  A factory in a major Chinese city has imported a bar soap packaging production line.  The line has rampant problems of not putting the soap into the box.  The factory owner had found a PhD in automation to solve this empty-box problem.

The PhD in turn had recruited another 10+ people to reseach the problem.  They finally have integrated micro-electronics, X-ray and mechanical technology to design a system to tackle the empty-box problem.  This costs the factory over half-million dollars.

When packaged soap box without the bar inside passing through the sensors of this system, a mechanical hand will push the box out of the moving belt.

Another factory located in a small town in southern China has imported the same bar soap packaging line. This factory is staffed mostly by migrant workers from the countryside.

The factory owner was very agitated when discovering the empty-box problem.  He grabbed a migrant worker out of the production line and yelled, "Solve this f___ing problem for me or your ass is on the line!"

This migrant worker had found a solution quickly-- he put up an electric fan, set it to highest blowing speed at the end of production.  Empty boxes will be blown away when coming.   The fan costs less than $200.

"Hi Ken,  does this soap packaging story has anything to do with Feng Shui or Chinese metaphysics?"

Almost every trade can learn something from this story.  Here are some of the lessons:

1. There are many solutions to the same problem
2. Not the "latest and greatest" answer or technology are the best solution or cost-effective.
3. Simple solution that does the same thing is better than complicated solution
4. PhDs are not necessarily smarter than you, but for sure they cost you more

In Feng Shui, "the latest and greatest" are likely be the ones that did not work too well in distant past and got recycled as the latest secret recently "released".

Some Feng Shui problems can be solved by simple 5-element adjustments, forms (Feng Shui) or even using bagua theory.  Instead,  some people hire "famous" or expensive Feng Shui masters who likely will turn your house upside down with major remodeling or tilt your doors.

Funny lineage math

Disclaimer:  Ken Lai is neither a lineage-hugger nor a "no-lineage independent".  He is a "whatever works" opportunist regardless of the origin.

A common criticism of the lineage system is the practice of "keeping a hand" (留一手  liú yī shǒu; witholding some secrets) by the Sifu (teacher) from his disciples.  This practice is probably as popular if not more common today than ancient times.

In the old days, choosing an "indoor student" was like picking a life-long partner.  The master checked everything and especially the moral character of the potential student.  The student will serve the master  from cleaning his toilet to carry his luopan for many years before getting some "real knowledge".   Today, this type of fellowship is replaced by commodity economy -- paying a huge sum of money to the master.  There are cases of "guaranteed indoorship" without even looking at the incoming student provided US$5000 or more is paid.  It is like selling a franchise to the student who will in turn market the same thing as soon as he "graduates".  The master has more incentive to "keep a hand" to maintain his "upperhand"  because people are more materialistic than those in the old days.

Some critics frequently use a simple math formula to discredit the lineage system.  The logic is simple:  if every generation keeps 10% secrets from the next generation, a lineage will have nothing left after 10 to 12 generations.

This argument is mathematically and even logically sound.  It is an example of simplistic or deceptive reasoning using numbers.  It assumes:

1.  the lineage's knowledge-base does not grow over generations
2.  "keeping a hand" always happens, even between father and son situation
3.  the junior generation will always be satisfied with whatever craps that previous generation gave them
4.  the junior generation will not THINK and develop their own solution when critical info is witheld

If you do not believe my arguments, just look at how many different "varieties" of Flying Star Feng Shui out there--- at least 10+ with variations from funny ways of flying the stars, counting yang-yin, tai-ji, periods to mixing concepts with other schools.  Most come with their own re-interpretations of Feng Shui classics like the "Green Satchel Classic".   All claim to be "authentic". Same scenario with Bazhai Feng Shui.

Therefore, this "keeping a hand" practice actually simulates creativity and explorations instead of killing or diluting the lineage system.  People are always curious and trying to "figure out" if something are missing or witheld. Whether the end results are positive or negative will be another long discussion.  Everything comes in a package of both good and not so good.

Extreme real estate marketing with numerology

At US$9100 per sq. ft., Hong Kong's Tian-hui Skyscraper (天匯) is the most expensive real estate in the world.

The building is 40 storeys high-- but it has an 88th floor at the highest level! What is going on?

In western societies, the number 13 is considered inauspicious, so some builders have deliberately "skipped" the 13th floor for their buildings. Donald Trump's Trump Tower has done that. For the Chinese, the number 4 sounds like "death", so some buidings will have no 4th, 14th, 40th and 44th floors.

If you go to any China-town, you will see many cars with license plates like "888", "168", "118" and the likes. Properties with "8" number can also be sold at higher prices. Chinese like the number 8 because it sounds like "prosperity" or "getting rich".

Tian-hui Skyscaper is 40 storeys high with 34 residential floors. The followings are the floor number assignments:
*1- 6th floor (commercial/parking)
*8 - 12th floor (5 floors): no 13 and 14th
*15- 23rd floor (9 floors): no 24th
*25- 33rd floor (9 floors): no 34th
*35- 39th floor (9 floors): no 40- 59th
*60- 61 floor (2 floor): no 62nd
*63rd floor (no 64-65th)
*66th floor (no 67th)
*68th floor (no 69-87, jumps to 88th)
*88th floor

This is the most blatant and haphazard floor numbering to attract buyers in history.

Some local consumer groups complain that the real estate developer misleads the public on the numbering of the floors for financial gains. Local politicans criticize the Hong Kong government of failing to regulate the industry. The "4th Uncle", nickname of the developer, said, "Buyers are delighted with the floor numbers!"

Whoever can afford US$9100 per sq. ft. or US$56M for a 6200 sq. ft. unit in the building should not be too stupid.

Incidentially, the height of the building is 152 meters. "152" sounds like "not easy to maintain the #1 position" in the local Cantonese dialect. In terms of Feng Shui, 5-2 combination means disaster and major sickness or even death! Fortunately the "1" mitigates the negative effects of 5-2 a little bit.

Feng Shui and 4P

I have run into a case of a ding-fire day-master (DM) with heart problem. But the client does not know her birth hour. Her current 10-year-luck has just entered into strong water formation. Heart problem normally involves ding-fire.

So naturally I would think she is a weak DM, but plugging in all 12 possible Chinese hours into her chart.  However, only one hour will make her DM strong, all the rest will be weak-- 1/12 chance.

I need to find more evidence to prove that she indeed is a strong DM.

How? By asking questions on personality, family relationship and personal preferences. Questions like:
-- who makes more decisions-- you or your spouse?
-- your spouse beats you up or you beat up your spouse?
-- what colors do you like?
-- do you take your time to do things?
........

The answers I got match to that of a strong DM. So what I can deduce is that even if water is favorable to a strong Ding day-master, but too much of a good thing still screws her heart up. It is all about yin-yang balance. She is over 70 years old.

Amazingly, I checked the Feng Shui of her house--- her bedroom is in NE with 5-9 star (causing heart, blood or eye problems) and annual 2-sickness star is at her main door. In terms of 8-mansions Feng Shui, her room is in "disaster" palace.

This is another case of 4P and Feng Shui synchonize to each other. I've used techniques from my Destiny Management courses plus Feng Shui cures for this case. Here are the cures used:

-- certain plants
-- coins
-- white crystal
-- removing certain items from her house

Ain't they green and natural?

The man who is both a Feng Shui genius AND a Feng Shui idiot

Is it possible for someone to be a Feng Shui genius AND Feng Shui idiot at the same time?

A case in point would be Nina Wang's $13 billion estate legal case in Hong Kong.

Tony Chan, Nina Wang's "secret lover", claims that Nina had paid him US$30M in cash and eventually willed her whole estate to him because of "love".

Nina's original heir, Chinachem Charity foundation claims that Nina paid US$30M to Tony for his "Feng Shui services" and NOT out of "love".

Each side of the litigating party has found their own "expert Feng Shui witness" to testify about the "prowness" or "lack of prowness" of Tony Chan's Feng Shui knowledge.

Tony Chan has hired the world famous traditional/ classical Feng Shui master Mr. YYZ. Based on Tony's Feng Shui practices of burning real paper money, digging of "Feng Shui holes", burying of ritualistic objects and Tony's secret Feng Shui manuscript, MR. YYZ concludes that Tony is "a Feng Shui master who does not know Feng Shui".

This conclusion is exactly what Tony's lawyer wants--- that Tony Chan does not know much about Feng Shui and hence, it is his charm or Nina's love that the latter willed her estate to Tony.

Incidentially, Mr. YYZ is also the co-author of "The complete idiot guide to Feng Shui" book.

Chinachem Charity has solicited the service of a Daoist Feng Shui master Mr. Szeto. 80% of the Macau casino Feng Shui jobs were done by him. He also hosts a few occult and supernatural cable TV shows in Hong Kong. So Mr. Szeto has the "home field advantage" and name-recognition here.

Mr. Szeto did not talk low about Tony Chan's Feng Shui practices. Instead, he explains the hidden meanings and rationale of each ritual objects used by Tony. Obviously, Tony does not do traditional but ritualistic Feng Shui.

Mr. Szeto has stopped short of saying Tony is a Feng Shui genius. After all, who in Feng Shui history has made more money than Tony Chan? Even Mr. Szeto has made a lot less than him!

So, did these two Feng Shui expert witnesses tell the truth?

In my opinion, both did tell the truth BASED on their own special perspective or bias. A traditional-trained Feng Shui master will definitely testify that someone who practice ritualistic Feng Shui is NOT real (or traditional) Feng Shui. It is just weird that Tony Chan's lawyers had hired a traditional Feng Shui master instead of a ritualistic one.

This case illustrates the diversity of Feng Shui practices and problems in defining what is "real Feng Shui". I think the business of "expert Feng Shui witness" will be a short-lived one.
