Of Mouse and Me

Here in Minnesota can get very cold in Winter.  Temperate was -30C or lower just last week ago.  It is not unusual to have "uninvited guests" coming into my house during winter---- mice.

I have two cats.  But they cannot stop mice from running around my house.  These mice are 2- 3 inches big and run under the stove and fridge.  My cats are too big to get under these spaces.  Hence I reluctantly use mouse traps to handle this problem.

So far this year my mouse had neutralized one mouse and my cats had caught one alive (and played with it!)  I had released the live mouse back to the wild.

Two nights ago, I had heard the loud noise of mouse trap activation while sleeping.  I checked the trap about 10 hours later and found the head of a field mouse (or "deer mouse") got caught by the trap.  It looked motionless and dead.

I want the mouse to rest in peace.  I had used a plier to release the mouse from the trap spring mechanism.  I saw the mouse body moving slightly!  It is not dead .......yet.

I think as a matter of time, this poor mouse will move on to see its creator.  I want it to move on in comfort and hopefully move to a better realm and afterlife.  So I put it in a transparent candy box and mattress it with "Pureland Mantra Wheel" talismans (往生淨土咒, for purification of negative karma and rebirth in Pureland).  

A friend had gifted me a digital Sutra player a few years ago.  I put this player in front of the mouse and simply turn it on.  It plays a sutra chanted by Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

A few hours later, this mouse was sitting up and raising its head!  I put a few drops of water into the box and it had sipped the water.  Later I put a few bread crumbs to feed it.

20 hours after rescuing the mouse from the trap, I took it to a park nearby and released it.

This mouse had jumped out quickly when I opened the box.  It had stared at me for about 2 minutes and then turn around and jumped away. 

Live your life, little mouse.

PS.:  I am curious about the Sutra this mouse had heard.  The sutra name "Namgylma Mantra" (尊勝佛母心咒) was imprinted on the digital sutra player.  According to the awakenstate.com,  "This mantra is practiced to increase merit, longevity, and wisdom, and particularly to clear the hindrances of untimely death."

Talisman for protection from the coronavirus and other illnesses

The info below is about a powerful talisman for protection from illnesses and plagues like the coronavirus. 

GREAT PENG (Garuda) GOLDEN WINGED DEITY MANTRA WHEEL TALISMAN

 In China, Garuda is called "Great Peng Deity" or "Great Eagle Deity".  This belief is borrowed from Tibetan Buddhism.  Tibetan Buddhism in turn borrows the idea from Hinduism.  Garuda is a mythical being that has some resemblance to a eagle.  Many countries use Garuda as their national symbols (e.g., Thailand, Indonesia,….).  In Hinduism and Buddhism, Garuda deity protects people from sickness, plagues, poison and unknown illnesses.

Protection from earthquake 唐东杰布抗地震咒轮

I had planned to post this talisman yesterday but cancelled in the last minute.  Then Los Angeles has a pretty strong earthquake this morning.....

Give a little and gain a mountain?

A Buddhist disciple had called a master on the phone and complained,
"I have worked hard and still not achieved much, why?  I have chanted mantra and done good deeds, but my destiny has not changed."
一位佛友電話抱怨道：為什麼我努力了還是得不到？念經行善了，命運卻不變？

Master: "Let me give you $500, is this OK?"
法師：我給你寄五百塊錢，好不好？

Disciple:  "Master, I dare not take your money!"
佛友：師父，你的錢我不敢要呢！

Master:  "I want you to help me do one thing."
法師：我是要你幫我辦一件事。

Disciple: "Master, tell me what you want and I will absolutely do it perfectly for you!"
佛友：師父，你說辦什麼，我絕對幫你辦好！

Master:  "Please buy a car for me."

法師：幫我買一輛汽車。

Disciple (surprisingly):  "Master, you cannot buy a car with $500!"

佛友(驚呀地)：師父，五百塊怎麼能買到汽車呢？！

Master:  "You also know one cannot get a car for $500?"
法師：你知道五百塊買不到汽車？！

There are many people in this world trying to give a little to get a lot in return.  Obviously, this is not quite possible.

世上有太多的人都在絞盡腦汁，只想付出一點點，就得到很多。而這，顯然是不太可能的

Ken's comment:  This story is applicable to any religion or even events.  For example, someone admires the income of a medical doctor but does not have the patience or put in the effort needed to go through many years of medical school training.  I have some people pleading for spiritual help but are not willing to put in the time and effort to get them out of their predicament.  They want instant good luck with little effort or simply hearing good news.  The universe is fair (in the long run).  You get what you put in.

Mountain and Water

Buddhists have 3 levels of perceptions of reality:

One sees a mountain. It is a mountain to him.  One sees water.  It is water to him.
看山是山，看水是水；

The mountain one sees is not a mountain and water is not water.
看山不是山，看水不是水；

This mountain is still a mountain no matter how one looks at it, so is the water.
看山還是山，看水還是水。

Our perception of reality revolves around these 3 levels.

What I want to see.
What the society has conditioned me to see.
What my inner self really sees.

Is reality real? 
Buddha says reality is a reflection of our heart (mind).

Diamond Sutra Vs. Diamond Drill II: Secret of Pain Control

Last October I had blogged about using Diamond Sutra to overcome dental pain caused by dental-drilling.

Yesterday, I have my third dental crown done.  With previous two pain-control experience with Diamond Sutra, I thought this trip should be painless.

Alas!  Life always gives you some surprises (or "sh** happens" in daily language).  Age must be catching up with me after hitting 60,  I forgot the first sentence of the Diamond Sutra while the dentist was drilling my teeth.

While in panic (and pain!), I recite silently the easy-to-remember compassion mantra "Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ".  But it did not reduce the pain.

Out of desperation, I had recited Diamond Sutra without the first sentence while whacking my brain trying to remember the first sentence of the Sutra.

Amazingly, Diamond Sutra still stopped the drilling pain without reciting the first sentence. Eventually, my brain had recollected the first sentence of the Sutra.

A question come to my mind-- why the shorter Sutra "Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ" does not work?  Is it too short to keep my mind busy enough to divert its attention to dental drilling?  If this is the case, any longer sutra or prayer from other religions should work too.

As an intellectually curious or dummy,  I had sacrificed myself as an experimental subject to test this hypothesis.   I had stopped recited Diamond Sutra and recited the Catholic "Our Father" prayer.

But....the last time that I had recited "Our Father" prayer was in 1974 when I was a senior in a Catholic high school.  I had forgotten most of it!

Was I in big trouble?

No, it actually worked better in stopping pain while my brain frantically search through the brain cells for the "fragments" of this prayer.  In other words,  this "search" had directed or distracted the focus from the dental pain to the prayer.

"Ken,  I am an atheist.  What can I do instead of reciting prayer or sutra?"

You may try to recite some passages, poems, lyrics ... that you had learned during your childhood or anything that you can barely remember as distraction.  It should work just the same.

This is my little pain control without drugs tips to humanity.  But there is no escape for the pain of paying tax and dental bills. You may help reduce my bill-paying pain by reading my ad below and click the link if you could.

Helping people to move on... to better afterlife

Note:  In 2013, I had written a message about how to help any being to move on to a better afterlife with a Buddhist talisman ("Heaven is within reach......even for your pets!").  A few days ago I suddenly received an email with "Suicide" heading because of that message.  I was given permission to publish the email with identifying info removed.

Hi Ken,

My sister committed suicide on (date withheld).  She was baptised years ago but had not attended church for a long while.  She had a Christian funeral.

Among all the siblings, I was the last to see her alive when I had dinner at her house 5 days before her passing.  I had been worried as far back as one year ago that she might take her own life.  I had expressed my worry to a few close friends.  I feel quite guilty that I did not do more for her.

Perhaps it was my sister's karma that I found your blog a few years back, printed out the talisman, was able to recollect that it may be helpful to her.  I am very forgetful and have changed handbags a number of times over the past years and in the process keep misplacing and losing stuff.  

It was miraculous because her suicide left me devastated and in a state of shock and yet it suddenly occurred to me that I could use this talisman to help her.

When I went to her wake, I showed her the Manushri Bodhisattva Auspicious Diagram and the Liberation Upon Passing-By Mantra that I downloaded from your website because I was concerned about her destination, in view that she had taken her own life, which is generally viewed negatively.

(Ken note:  According to Chinese Buddhism, the souls of people who have committed suicide will relive the pain of their of suicidal act once everyday for hundreds of years before moving on to other realm as punishment).

I flashed the card to her again during the cremation.  Does this work? 

On the night of  (date, 12 days after her passing), during a car journey from Suzhou to Shanghai (China), I closed my eyes to rest and I saw a younger version of her surrounded by bright white light.  It did not seem like a dream, more like a vision. 

Would appreciate any guidance or advice from you.

Your flashing of the Liberation Upon Passing-By Mantra card seems to work.  I know because my late mother was a Christian (also rarely went to church) and had a Christian funeral.  I had a dream about her soon after her natural death in her black burial dress. She looked like in distress.  Then at the 49th days after her death,  I saw her in a bright white dress (I had never seen that style before) and looked much younger than her old age in a place that looked like a transportation hub (like a train station).  She was radiant like what you see in your vision.  I was an atheist at the time of her death and had not used this talisman.

I am surprised this Buddhist item also works on a Christian.  I guess it is your faith (or intention/ heart) that makes the whole thing works. 

The Liberation Upon Passing-By Mantra symbol has accumulated the mass consciousness of millions of people over the centuries--  it has immense power to help lost souls to move onto a better afterlife.

A single individual's intention power may not be big, but by tapping into power of Liberation Upon Passing-By Mantra, s/he can create miracle for the departed-- whether this is a human being or a pet.

"With respect to my sister's passing, I kept crying every day when I thought about what a tough life and sad end she had and how I will not see her again.  But ever since the vision, the sadness has lifted and there are no more crying episodes.

I do hope that the talisman will help many, many others who have the good luck to chance upon your blog.  I take it out now and then to look at it, in the hope that it will also help me in the afterlife."

Diamond Sutra vs. Diamond Drill

The blog title sounds like a Japanese monster movie.  It is actually about my adventures in a dental office.

I had a dental crown done a few months ago.  It was a two visits operation.  First visit to drill away parts of the worn out tooth, make some plastic molds to create a temporary crown and cap it on top of the tooth.  The process could be painful even with anesthesia.  The second visit is to replace the temporary crown with the final one, is not painful and done without anesthesia.

Yesterday I had another dental crown operation.  As usual, the dentist had given me an anesthesia shot and drilled my worn out tooth.  I still felt the pain, especially when the drill hitting some tooth nerves.  Suddenly a purple light flashed in my mind and I had recited a 4-lines gatha of the Diamond Sutra in Chinese in my mind.  In English, it will be:

"All conditioned phenomena
Are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow,
Like dew or a flash of lightning;
Thus we shall perceive them.”

My pain had disappeared while the dentist was still drilling happily.

Diamond Sutra is about non-abiding and non-attachment and that everything in life is an illusion.  I interpret that pain is also an illusion and thus should not be painful.

"Ken, this cannot prove the Sutra had worked its magic.  You had an anesthesia shot."

Well, I agree totally.  So I had done an experiment...

It was over an hour after a few plastic molds were done and the effect of anesthesia was 95%+ gone.  It came to the final installation of the temporary crown which requires some more drilling to fit.  The dentist had asked me if I want another anesthesia shot.

"No."  I manned up and replied.

I had regretted it within 30 seconds.

The dentist had drilled like there is no tomorrow.  It was so painful that I had almost levitated over the dental operation chair.  I knew the anesthesia had left me alone.

The moment of truth came--- I kept reciting the above 4-lines gatha of Diamond Sutra in my mind.  The pain was almost gone even the dentist was still drilling.  I still felt a little pain but it did not bother me physically.

You may try this trick next time when you run into painful or dangerous situation.

In Memoriam, Blue Bird

In 2002, my 13 years old son wanted a pet.  We went to a pet shop and bought a blue parakeet.  My son named it "Percy".

Then we found Percy was not happy and lonely.  So we bought him a partner, a green parakeet.
 
Within a few months, my son had lost interest in the parakeets.  We got stuck with the feeding and caring of these birds.

Percy had a strong personality.  He would make sure you know how he felt.  He could make annoying noises that sound like 10+ birds were chirping when he was not happy.

He knew how to "bang" the bird cage door when he wanted us to refill the feeder.

After 2 years, his green partner had died.  We bought him another partner, a white parakeet.

In 2007, we have adopted a big black cat Meow-Meow.  Meow-Meow spares no time to explore the bird cage.
 
Meow-Meow weighed 15 pounds and Percy was about 3 oz.. This is like a T-rex dinosaur sitting a few inches from a human, separated by a cage only inches away.  But Percy did not panic at all. 


It looked like the cartoon "Tweety Bird".

Cat and birds co-existed peacefully with occasionally "admiration" by the cat sitting a few inches from the cage when the cat is bored.

In the summer of 2012,  Percy's white parakeet partner had died.  I was hesitated to get him another partner this time because life expectancy of parakeet is about 10 years.  Percy was a pretty "old bird" by definition.  He had outlived two partners already.  If I get him a new partner and he suddenly hit the bucket, I will get stuck taking care of another bird for 10+ years.  I am not a young man either.

Daoist "100+ ClemencyTalismans" 

To alleviate Percy's loneliness, I moved his cage frequently to the balcony or near a window, so that he could see and hear other birds outside.  He also chirped with other birds outside from time to time.

Then in an early May morning, I found Percy lay down motionless on the cage floor.  I had almost bought a new parakeet two days ago but hesitated.

We were both sad and happy for Percy.  Percy can now move on to another realm or at least meet his late partners.

To ensure that Percy will reborn in a high realm of existence, I had cleansed his body with holy water.  I had rubbed his body with a Daoist "100+ Clemency" talismans to get all the "pardons" he needs to pass through the underworld.  Finally I had buried him with a Tibetan talisman that will enable him to reincarnate as a higher being than a bird.

I have buried him next to his late partner.  A few weeks later, a plant with blue and white flowers, the colors of Percy's feathers,  grows from his grave.

Buddha and Cats

Dogs are well-known for their loyalty, like staying at the tombs of their owners.  Cats seems to be more spiritual.  I  have seen quite a few video of cats doing mediation and even reading sutra in Youtube.

Karma Credit Windfall of the Year

The  message below wakes me up from my extended summer hibernation.  It shows you the best deal for getting huge positive karma credit with minimal effort. 

According to Tibetan Buddhism., whatever good deeds (and bad deeds too) that you do during a lunar or solar eclipse will be multiplied by 700 billion to 100k billion times 

Whether you believe in Tibetan Buddhism or not, this is a "one to billion" deal that is too good to miss. Your "good deed" can be as easy as chanting a simple mantra or as "painful" as donating a few dollars to your favorite charity (and getting the karma credit for 700- 100k billion of dollars, even beating Bill Gate). 

This is the best opportunity to dedicate substantial merits from this good deed to your karma creditors, your ancestors, your aborted children, suffering souls and the likes. 

Karma creditors are the primary source of one's suffering and misfortunes. Appeasing your karma creditors will make your life easier and may be richer.

Meeting Sakyamuni Buddha in Hong Kong

In 1011, during the Song Dynasty of China, a monk from India, Master Danapala, had offered the sacred relic of the skull of Sakyamuni Buddha to Emperor Zhen.  This relic was housed in the underground palace of the Sacred Relic Pagoda inside Changgan Temple.

The Sacred Relic Pagoda was destroyed later due to war and the relic was disappeared for over 1000 years.

In 2008, during an archeological excavation of the Great Baoen Temple, the original underground palace housing the relic was discovered.  The sacred relic of the skull of Sakyamuni Buddha has "reappeared".

Relics of Sakyamuni Buddha are not rare because there were over 80,000 pieces of Buddha's relics collected when he was cremated.  But a large chunk of his skull like the rediscovered one is very rare and considered "national treasure" and the ultimate holy relic of the Buddhist world.

From April 25 to 30th (2012), this sacred relic is transported to Hong Kong to celebrate the birthday of Buddha and the 15th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to China.  The public is invited to see and pay homage to the relic in a coliseum.  Over 300,000 people have attended this event.

The weather was strange during the relic exhibition. The city here had unusually big rain and thunderstorms during mid-nights and sunshine or hazy sky during the days.  The rainfall had cleansed and purified the qi or energy of the city.  Some Buddhists said that beings other than human also wanted to pay their homage to the Buddha relic-- hence bringing the big thunderstorms at night.

I was fortunate to be in Hong Kong doing research when the exhibition was on. This is probably my affinity with Buddha.

Majority of the relic worshipers are from the older generations-- most are over 50 years old.  Older folks are probably thinking more about what will happen after death. I saw many old, sick, infirm and people on wheelchairs coming to "meet" Buddha-- similar to people in the western world flocking to holy sites with relics for inspirations and faith-healing.

I had seen other Buddhist relics, including Sakyamuni Buddha's crystallized relics in small bead form in 2005 when there was a relic exhibition in Minnesota.  I remember the indescribable pleasant and calm energies near the relics even the exhibition room was crowded with sweating people.

I felt the same jubilant and peaceful energies in the coliseum. Some people were in states of euphoria. 

I like the feeling of this holy energy and seized the opportunities to stick around the coliseum.  I ended up attended Dharma Services three times and absorbed a few hours of Buddha energies.

"The opportunity to see the sacred relic is as good as meeting Buddha" (得見舍利，如見佛陀). Now I can die a happy man.

Starving Cows in China

China Daily has reported a bizarre memorial video posted online by a farmer.  He uses the video to protest the death of his dairy cows due to land dispute with local government.

"The five minute video shows the impromptu memorial service in Zhaoling town, Luohe city in Central China's Henan province where it is claimed 230 dairy cows died after the farm's gates were locked and the land transferred due to unpaid rent."

In the video, the farm owner eulogizes the cows and prays for their safe passage to heaven.  He also accuses government officials embezzle his funds.  Last segment of the video shows Buddhist rituals are conducted to help the souls of these cows to migrate to Nirvana.  

Here is the response from a government official:

"According to the contract, because the cattle farm didn't execute the contract, the local government has the right to deal with the land without negotiations and the cattle farm should take the consequences..." 
  
Regardless of who is right or wrong, knowingly letting 230 cows starve to death is animal cruelty in any civilized society.  This lack of compassion and respect for life is sickening.

Land disputes between local government and farmers are common in China.  Local government officials team up with land developers to build housing estates to boost GDP.  Farmers or local residents are driven away from their land with little compensations.   This case is unusual as the victims are the defenseless dairy cows from Australia.
