Rain-making with Imperial QMDJ

In early May of this year, a student of the Imperial QMDJ discussion list had emailed me:

"Dear Sifu Ken,
Here in XXXXX we are in dire straits. It has not rain for over two months. Last week in one early morning it did rain but it was short and brief. Our Catholic Church has even issued a prayer for rain."

This student had discussed using "Dragon-Dun" and "Cloud-Dun" QMDJ profiles to pray for rain. Dragon-Dun and Cloud-Dun are part of the famous "9-Dun" in QMDJ. "Dun”means escape or retreat in Chinese.  9-Dun are among the most auspicious Qi-Men profiles.  It consists of a group of "9-apps"  (in internet language)--  heaven-dun, earth-dun, human-dun, cloud-dun, wind-dun, dragon-dun, spirit-dun and ghost-dun.

-- Utilizing water for battles, crossing bridges and flooding enemies

-- Worshiping dragon gods, praying for rain and starting voyages

-- Constructing/repairing bridges/ dams, digging wells, fishing and water-management

Cloud-Dun Characteristics: 
-- Good for hiding, retreating and ambushing; benefits host but not guest

-- Good for both defense and attack; can do guerrilla type attacks

-- Suitable for boosting morale and army equipment, battle-planning, building castle and making weapons

-- Good for learning Dao or spiritual pursuit, praying for rain or making artificial rain

This student had followed the Imperial QMDJ procedures (not disclose here) and prayed during a dragon-dun hour and did the same in a cloud-dun hour on May 15, 2016.  He emailed me on May 16 with the following:

"Of the (selected) date and time and direction, (we) first go to the dragon-dun at north (and) then cloud-dun in the west.  And guess what ? Today we prayed in the morning.  Around noon there were trickles and I thought this was it.  But the sun came out this evening.  Around 8:30 pm there was a downpour three consecutive times😇😇😇.  Your apprentice (had) witnessed the rain (and wondered) whether (this was) coincidence or not 😊☺️😉" 

Given the drought situation in southeast Asia, this student can probably setup shop for "rain-making" service.

"9-Dun" are some of the most likely to work and powerful techniques in QMDJ.

Will the real QMDJ please stand up?

It is over 10 years since I first taught the San Yuan version of QMDJ in English.  At that time, there were not many versions of QMDJ available, even in Chinese.

Today's QMDJ scene is totally different. There are numerous versions of QMDJ available, especially in mainland China.  Most are "private label" QMDJ using the teacher's name as title, like "John Doe QMDJ".  Some exploit the names of well-known religions as labels.  Most claim "secret lineage", "family heirloom" or "recent rediscovery of ancient manuscripts".

Below are some examples:

• Minute-pan QM 分家奇门 (10 minute per ju)
• Psychic QMDJ 通灵奇门遁甲术
• Flying Jia QMDJ 飞甲奇门
• Wealth QMDJ 财富奇门
• Bazi QMDJ 八字奇门

Most of these "QMDJ" are copycats of San Yuan QMDJ with minor modifications.  They either change the methods or procedures of deriving the QMDJ chart.  For example, "Daoist QMDJ" uses Liu-ren or Plum-flower method to randomize the QMDJ chart selection.  Others simply make minor additions or subtractions of some insignificant QMDJ features to make themselves "unique".  Most if not all keep the QMDJ engine or contents and interpretation methods intact.  After all, it is too much work to recreate the whole QMDJ engine. 

Unfortunately, some of these "mutant" QMDJ have been translated into English and invaded English-speaking countries. 

Mainland Chinese QMDJ focuses more on divination and external indicators while Taiwanese QMDJ focuses on date and task selections.  

So which one is the real or authentic QMDJ?  It is easy to decide if you have patience.  Wait a few years and you will find most of these "A-goods" QMDJ ("A-货", Chinese term for counterfeit or fake goods) will disappear from the cyberspace.  Simply don't be tempted by all the claims made by these QMDJ marketers.  You may have better luck to learn from teachers who have been teaching QMDJ for over 10+ years.  Opportunists who aim for some quick bucks are unlikely to last this long.

"QMDJ-XKDG"? Putting Dinosaurs and Homosapiens together

Note:  The message below was written in August 2015 for my "Professional Imperial QMDJ" discussion group. I wrote this article after being bombarded with questions about this so-called "QMDJ-XKDG" by my curious students for years.  I have updated it with some new notes here.

Ancient QMDJ books

Some marketers have marketed a "Qi-Men-Dun-Jia Xuan-Kong-Da-Gua"  (奇门遁甲玄空大卦 QMDJ-XKDG) course a few years ago. You (my students) have asked many questions about this course.

In Chinese metaphysics, there is a fetish of "na-jia" or trying to fit everything into the bagua.  Xuan-Kong-Da-Gua or XKDG itself is an example-- artificially fitting 64 hexagrams into the bagua or 8-trigrams by repeating 4 jia-zi (binomials).  XKDG is still not accepted by some Feng Shui schools.

There is also a tendency in Chinese metaphysics circle to stuff 64 hexagrams into existing systems and repackage it as "XXXX-XKDG".   These marketers often claim that this is no new stuff but a recent "rediscovery" of long-lost ancient manuscript or technique.

During mid-Qing dynasty (around 1700-1800), the government had relaxed the restrictions on the spreading of QMDJ to help countering the increasingly aggressive western power and internal rebellions.  Scholars and amateurs at that time had gone nuts and written many "armchair" books on QMDJ.  "Armchair" means out of imagination or simply using formula mechanically to generate more QMDJ theories.  Some may work and most do not or simply have no empirical testing to backup the "new" theories.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as "QMDJ-XKDG".  Modern marketers have coined the term "QMDJ-XKDG" because this later day version of QMDJ has somehow "squeezed" 64 hexagrams into the system.  The original author(s) had called this version of QMDJ as "Golden Mirror of Nation-building and Capital setting for 10 Thousands Years Reign" (Aren't we lucky that Hitler had not gotten a copy?).  I have read the book about this "nation/ capital building" QMDJ. (For around NT$ 300 or US$ 10, you can get the Chinese book on this topic in Taiwan).

QMDJ was developed around 200 AD using only 9 palaces or sectors (the rudimentary compass at that time could not do measurement down to individual degree). XKDG requires accuracy down to 360/384 or 0.938 degree (even compass during the1800's could not be this accurate).  Mixing QMDJ with XKDG together is as funny as putting dinosaurs with humans together like the "One Million Years BC" movie.  QMDJ and XKDG were over 1500 years apart.

The original author of this version of QMDJ had claimed it is for "capital building" and provincial/ city level "huge projects".  It is not designed for individual house, building or even housing estates though one may use it as "reference".   If we assume it works as claimed-- there are not too many capitals around or huge projects for Feng Shui students to build.  This means only these so-called  "QMDJ-XKDG" teachers make money from selling the course.The students will probably find little or no market for "QMDJ-XKDG" other than selling the course again to others.   It is even worse if the darn thing does not work.

Anyway, the "capital-building chart 建都盤" looks impressive if not intimidating for the uninitiated.  It is just iterations of some formulas into individual palace.

Imperial Qing dynasty was no longer exist in China since 1911.  It should be here today if "QMDJ-XKDG" was employed.  And we know from historical texts and Qing Imperial Tombs that Qing emperors were very into Feng Shui and QMDJ.  The Qing military commander Nian Gengyao (年羹尧) was known for using QMDJ in quelling rebellions.

The essence of the question is:  Can QMDJ be scaled up and applied to regional or national level when it was originally designed for small scale or single location application?  

QMDJ itself is a very complicated system with over 50 data points and numerous dimensions.  XKDG is not as complicated as QMDJ, but it is not simple either.  Imagine the astronomical number of combinations generated when someone tries to tie these two system together!

Mixing unrelated systems and methods together is like building a QMDJ Frankenstein.  The more variables one adds to a system, the more complicated it becomes, the narrower for its application (like in this case, capital building and huge projects) and the higher probability of something goes wrong.  Isn't this too much for an individual Feng Shui practitioner to handle?

Just because a book was written a few hundred years ago does not necessarily make its contents valid.  Consumers need to do their crap-detection and hype-filtering before paying for courses based on these "ancient books" or "rediscovery of ancient techniques".

My 40 years of experience in Chinese metaphysics tells me if someone hypes about a recent "discovery" of an ancient text, technique or family heirloom manuscript in QMDJ, Feng Shui or any topic, the chance of this being crap is pretty high.  If the newly rediscovered "technique" is so amazing and powerful, it should have been utilized extensively like aspirin or sliced bread.  Why it is forgotten or disappeared into the garbage heaps of history long time ago?

Secrets of Qi-Men-Dun-Jia Indicators

I start teaching QMDJ since 2005.  Throughout the years, the most popular question on my Imperial QMDJ courses is:  does your course cover Qi-Men ke-ying (克應) or indicators?

Qi-Men “indicators” are defined as the effects and environmental clues appearing during the application of QMDJ method.  These indicators are divided into “static indicators” for events that may happen due to QMDJ and “dynamic indicators” for material objects, animals, scenes, colors, people, emotions, activities, weather, walks of life and etc., seen during the QMDJ process.  

These indicators are similar for different dimensions of QMDJ though certain patterns can be deduced based on the symbolic contents and elemental nature of individual elements. There are 4 major classes of indicators: 

• 9-stems indicators
• 8-gates indicators
• 9-stars and hour indicators
• San-qi and palace location indicators 

There are more combinations of indicators in terms of different dimensions of QMDJ, like in terms of palace, time, day, season, month and etc.  It can really get out of hand if all indicators from every QMDJ dimension are taken into consideration (not to mention if indicators from the interactions between different dimensions are also considered).  You will have a long list of possible indicators to “justify” your QMDJ application is working.  

These indicators, if seen, are supposedly showing that your QMDJ application is working or in the process of working.  The more indicators you see, the more “powerful” is your QMDJ energy in this application.

Contemporary teachers do not place too much attention for these indicators, largely because many QMDJ indicators or imageries were written for ancient agrarian societies, like horse-drawn carriages and farm animals, which are hard to see in modern societies.  However, some people (especially the “travelling salesmen”  or "Jiang-hu" type) like to emphasize or sensationalize the role played by indicators to make QMDJ sound dramatic and mysterious.

When being questioned about the lack of farm animals in modern cities,  some of these teachers will be proud to proclaim that they have "modernized" these ancient indicators by replacing, for examples, cow or any farm animals into "4-legged animals" and horse-drawn carriages into automobiles. 

The energy or qi of a cow (chou, earth in nature) is different from a cat (yin, wood in nature) or a pig (hai, water in nature).  Similarly, the energy imprint of a horse-drawn carriage is different from a car running on petrol.  

Are indicators original QMDJ components or redundant additions made by people from later periods?

QMDJ was developed for battlefield situations.  You can determine if  the indicators below will show up in a battlefield with two hostile armies there? 

• Indicators for Kai-gate:  You will see a noble person (helpful people or mentor) or celebration or banquets.
• Indicators for Ding stem: Pretty woman in colorful dress riding a horse/car in yin day, in red dress in yang day
• Indicator for Si hour: Fisherman, fishes, soft-shelled turtles, bare-chested and bare-feet person carrying something
• Indicators for Kan Palace: Person dressed in black, sound of drum; if seeing person/s with colorful dress, then it stands for major wealth coming. 

Anyone with half a brain can figure out that most of these indicators are likely not showing up in battlefield situations.    

The truth is— regardless of modernized "substitutes" , when one has a boatload of “indicators”, a few will show up for sure! This is more a psychological boost designed by some later QMDJ revisionists to increase people’s intention energy in the process.   

We have been applying QMDJ with minimal or no reference to indicators for years. 

Anyway, the Professional version of “Imperial QMDJ 4G” has the most extensive coverage of QM indicators in the English world.   Other versions will have sufficient coverage on this topic.  It is for the "peace of mind" of some students and not really needed.

1001 Uses of Feng Shui Luopan

To the average person, a Feng Shui luopan looks complicated and mysterious.  Many cartoons and TV series have used luopan as a magical tool with mysterious power.

In reality, a luopan is just an embellished compass with a big movable dial. It's primary function, similar to a regular compass, is to measure directions. 

Besides creating a "mysterious look" and measuring directions for the Feng Shui masters, luopan serves other functions that you may not have heard before.

Luopan as ghost detector

When you see your luopan needle go nuts or magnetic polarities totally reversed during a Feng Shui audit, it could be a sign of ghost or spirit in the area.  Ghost is a form of yin magnetic energy.  Sometimes the disturbance to your luopan needle is so severe that it knocks out the needle and the luopan stops functioning (and you kiss a few hundred US$ goodbye OR read my article on how to regenerate a luopan hidden somewhere in this blog or other online discussion list).

Ghosts dislike luopan because the symbols there remind them of the time dimension, which is unpleasant for them.  So you may use a luopan as a tool to drive ghosts away.  Better still, you run away first to save your luopan from magnetic damage!

The pix on the left shows Master Sezto Fa-zheng had used a luopan as ghost-detector and a mini-coffin to catch a ghost inside a haunted casino. 

Luopan as your door guard

Some people put a luopan on top of their front door to block out negative energy. 10 years ago I saw a Chinese supermarket in Sacramento (California) put a 2 feet long luopan on top of its front entrance!  That was a huge (and expensive) luopan!

Using a luopan to raise the auspicious energy level of a house

Houses with waning energy or qi can use a luopan to raise its auspicious or wealth energy (methods listed in my "Practical Date-Selection Course").

Using a luopan to change the direction of a house

This is a Qi-Men-Dun-Jia trick.

Using a luopan to lock in auspicious timing

This is also a Qi-Men-Dun-Jia trick.

Using a luopan as "metaphysical contraceptive"

Today is your lucky day-- here is the formula.  Simply put a luopan in your bedroom and it will decrease your chance of conception greatly. (Note:  Make sure you don't block the "entrance" with the luopan. No refund or returns if you still somehow manage to made a baby).

Luopan as Feng Shui aspirin for negative form energies
Black Hat Feng Shui is well-known for using crystals as their Feng Shui aspirin.  Some masters in Taiwan and China use luopans instead.  They advise clients to place a luopan facing any sha energy like T-junction, wall-knife and the likes to fix the sha qi problem. 

Using a luopan as a weapon

Yes, I literally mean a weapon-- minimum size one foot in diameter.  You can do some serious damages to whoever attacking you by hitting him/her with the corner or edge of a luopan.  However, it is much cheaper and more efficient by getting a bottle of beer--  drink the beer and use the bottle to do the trick.

Jersey Colors may determine World Cup results!

I found that the Chinese 5-elements theory is a pretty good predictor of winners for the World Cup semi-finals based on the actual team jersey color during the match.

Chinese 5-elements theory states that the world is made up by the interactions between 5 type of energies;  metal, water, wood, fire and earth.  The relationship between these 5 types of elements are as follow:

• Metal is represented by white color. It is controlled by fire (red), drained by water (blue or black) and nurtured by earth (yellow or brown).
• Wood is represented by green color.  It is controlled by metal (white), drain by fire (red) and nurtured by water (blue or black).
• Water is represented by blue or black color. It is controlled by earth (yellow or brown), drain by wood (green) and nurtured by metal (white).
• Earth is represented by yellow or brown color. It is controlled by wood (green), drain by metal (white) and nurtured by fire (fire).

 Here are the rules for picking the winning team:

• If that team's jersey color controls the opponent's jersey color (example, red will lose to blue) or
• If that team's jersey color drains the opponent's jersey color (white will lose to blue)

How does it work?
Jersey color stands for part of the energy field surrounding the players.  By controlling or draining the energy field of your opponent using appropriate colored jersey, you can enhance the energy level of your own team and weakening the energy level of your opponent.  There are other Chinese metaphysical methods like Qi-Men-Dun-Jia that can increase the odds of  winning by 10- 15% through the use of directional energies.

Plugging this 5-elements theory to June 26 and 27 semi-finals, we have the follow results:

1.  URU vs KOR (blue vs white)

-- blue is water and white is metal.  Water drains metal.  The theory predicts URU will win.

2.  USA vs GHA (white vs red)

-- white is metal and red is fire.  Fire burns or control metal.  The theory predicts GHA will win.

3. GER vs ENG (white vs red)

-- white is metal and red is fire. Fire burns or control metal. The theory predicts ENG will win.  Incorrect for this one.  But June 27th is a strong metal day according to Chinese calendar.
4. ARG vs MEX (blue/white vs green)
-- blue is water and white is metal and green is wood. Metal controls or chops wood. The theory predicts ARG will win.  Besides June 27th is a strong metal day according to Chinese calendar.

Chinese 5-elements theory's predictions are almost 75% accurate for the first two days of the World Cup semi-finals.  How about the next two days?

Assuming the teams will wear their standard team colored jerseys, here are the possible results:

1.  NED vs SVK (red vs blue)
-- red is fire and blue is water.  Water extinguishes fire.  So SVK is likely to win.
2.  BRA vs CHI (yellow vs red)
-- yellow is earth and red is fire.  Earth drains fire.  So BRA is likely to win.
3.  PAR vs JPN (red/white vs blue)
-- red is fire and white is metal; blue is water.  Water drains metal and water extinguishes fire.  So JPN is likely to win.
4.  ESP vs POR (red vs red)
-- it is unlikely that both teams wear red.  The team that wears white is likely to lose because red is fire and white is metal.  Fire burns metal.
