"Tang Ping" Wealth-attracting Cat 躺平招財貓

Do you want to attract wealth without making much effort?  If yes, today is your lucky day!  No purchase necessarily, no soliciting phone call/ email and DON'T email me.

All you need is to print out the "Tang Ping" wealth-attracting cat (躺平招財貓) below and put it where you stay most of the time, like your desk.  Then once or twice a day,  you stare at this photo and visualize money rolling in.

"Tang Ping" (躺平) is a buzzword meaning "lying flat" originated in China recently.  It refers to a new lifestyle trend of some Chinese young people.  They give up materialism or "rat race", vow to not getting married, procreating no baby and buying no real estate.  They make little or no effort for materialistic gains and fame or "lying flat".  They live frugally or in surviving mode.  This could be China's homebrew version of "hippie" or counter-culture.

"Tang Ping" in our case of wealth-attracting cat means getting wealth without making much effort!

The cat in this photo is my resident cat Lily, also known as Feng Shui Master Lily, Buddha's pet and Buddha's White Tiger (right guard).  She demonstrates the secret posture of attracting wealth while lying down in the photo.

When you get your effortless money, Master Lily requests that you send her 10 cans of cat food or USD$10 or donate to your local animal humane society.

"Ken, what should I do if money does not show up after a month or two with this Tang Ping kitty?"

This means you do not have enough merit or good karma points to get this wealth.  Simply go to your local animal humane society and adopt a real cat to pump up your merit.  Do not buy this kitty from a pet shop.

COVID vaccine for the ghosts?

Today is the 15th day and 7th month of the lunar calendar-- the Hungry Ghost Festival (盂蘭節) for many Eastern Asian countries, especially for the Chinese.  The origin of this festival can be traced back to India's "Ullambana" or "Ullumpana".

According to Chinese belief, the seventh lunar month is also called "ghost month".  During this month, the underworld opens its gate and lets its ghost residents "vacation" in the human world. 

This sudden influx of ghost tourists are really scary.  So people make offerings and burn paper money to appease them.  Hopefully these ghosts will make no trouble after being fed and showered with gifts and paper money.

This year I have found a new interesting offering to the ghosts-- a COVID vaccine kit with three doses!  Yes!  3 doses with different colors-- red, blue and green.  Probably the red one is from Sinovax, blue is Pfizer and green may be Moderna or AZ.  The UCDC (Underworld Center for Disease Control) seems to be more up-to-date than our CDC here.  They have already discovered the mixing vaccines and 3-doses tricks!

I hope there is no Antivaxer ghost in the underworld or else the people who offer this vaccine kit will be in great danger.

Let's talk dirty or money

 Will you be very happy if you run into a box of cool cash like this one?

But if you find out that you cannot enjoy this cash until you have died.........   

This box of cash looks like U.S. Dollars but actually is a version of Underworld currency or "joss paper money" for the dead.  This offering of joss paper money to the deceased is popular among Chinese in Southeast Asia.   

The $10,000 currency above is issued by the "Hell Bank" with the portrait of the Underworld Emperor.  It beats the $500 denomination of U.S. Dollar joss paper money with Ben Franklin portrait by 20 times.

With online marketing, there are competitions in Underworld U.S. Dollar joss paper money.  You may go to AliExpress website to check.

There are denominations of US$100 to 1 Million in the joss paper money section of AliExpress.  For  US$5, you can get 250 pieces of US$1M denomination joss paper money issued by Heaven-Hell Bank. Five real U.S.  dollars for 250M of underworld U.S. Dollars!  What a deal made in hell! 

There are also 5000 British pounds and 50,000 Euro denomination of joss paper money.

With different underworld currencies, the dead now can have their own FOREX trading to keep them busy.

Now comes to the million dollar questions:

• Do our deceased love ones really receive the joss paper money that we offer to them?
• If the answer is "yes", do these "money" worth much in underworld given the arbitrary value assigned.
• If the answer is "no" or "no idea", what purpose does burning joss paper money serve?

From the perspective of the living (us!),  this approach shows our remembrance, love and care to the deceased provides peace, emotional balance and even redemption to us regardless whether the deceased receive the offering or not.

From the perspective of the deceased (assuming souls of the deceased continue to live on),  this show of remembrance, love and care from the living love ones is what counts most.  The amount of offering and value of joss paper become insignificant.  After all, the living project the material needs and desires on this earth to the spiritual world, which may not be true or needed.

My Daoist Sifu (teacher) told me when preparing joss paper for offering,  make sure the love ones of the deceased touch all the joss paper money or fold the paper gold nuggets,  to imprint their qi or energy on the paper.  This energy is what makes the deceased feel comfort and loved.

DIY psychological therapy

Nine years ago, I had written about an inexpensive psychological therapy:

A few days ago, I saw this journal for sale in the World Market store:

This is a simple way to send your worries away.  You may even use your favorite plush animals instead of Worry Dolls by telling your worries to them.  The advantage of this method is that no one will spread your worries to the world.  Psychologists are pretty much doing the same thing-- listening to your worries, feeding back the worries to you and then charging you US$100- 200 per hour.  Your old worries may be gone but you have a new worry of paying the bills.

While I was a graduate student at the University of Minnesota 40+ years ago, I had assisted a social psychology professor to conduct a cross-cultural research on dreams.  I ran into an interesting folklore practice of handling nightmares in a certain Chinese region.  I still remember the details without checking any files.

When people in this Chinese region had a bad dream, they would write this poem on a city wall:

昨夜夢不祥，寫在西牆，各方君子讀一遍，解難消災。

"Last nite I have dreamed of inauspicious omen
I write this on the west wall
Gentlemen from all walks of life read this once
Will dissolve my misfortunes and disasters"

This method of self-counseling also keeps one's identity and nightmare secret.  It can be easily modified to handle other psychological events by replacing "dreamed of inauspicious omen" with other events.

In internet age, you may not want to write this poem on city wall.  You can post it on bulletin board or even online anonymously.
