Feng Shui: Sitting vs. Facing 山与向

When doing Feng Shui audit, the most critical part is figuring out the "facing" and "sitting" of the house because this determines the energy distribution within the property.

"Sitting" is also called "mountain" in Feng Shui terms.  This obviously implying the "back" of the house.  "Facing" is the angle measured based on the "sitting" of the house.

However, how to define "facing" and "sitting" is not this simple.  The topic remains a "hot potato" in Feng Shui circle.

Approaches to facing and sitting:
  • Using door location as facing-- the opposite of door facing will be the sitting.
  • Using mountain or back-support (buildings at the back) to determine facing-- door location may not be the opposite side of mountain.
  • Using the "yang-est" side like big open space or ocean or the side with most street traffic as facing-- even the door may be at the back of this "facing".
  • For Qi-Men-Dun-Jia Feng Shui (non-divination type)-- door location is very flexible and can be located in any trigram or palace.

For multiple storeys building with multiple tenants:
  1. Using the main entrance of the building as the facing,  the opposite of door facing will be the sitting--- all the units/ apartments will use the same sitting/ facing.
  2. Using the main door location of individual unit/ apartment as the facing,  the opposite of door facing will be the sitting.
  3. Using the "yang-est" side (side with most windows/ balcony) of individual unit/ apartment as the facing,  the opposite side will be the sitting.
  4. Combination of #1 and 3 with this rule:  For storeys 1 to X ("X" usually is 10+) storey, use rule #1 and after "Xth" storey, use rule #2.  The rationale is "Xth" below storeys will be more affected by earth energy and "Xth" above will be affected more by "heaven" or star energy.

There are numerous arguments on which method is more "correct" using how "qi" or energy travels and moves around a house.  For example, the argument against using the yang-est side of a highrise apartment as facing:  qi must be carried by people into the apartment.  People walk through building main entrance, take the elevator and walk to their apartment door.  They do not and cannot walk into their apartment through the balcony high above ground.

I have deliberately skipped the argument on whether "facing" OR "sitting" is more important to keep this short.

Regardless of the arguments, most schools think their method is the best!  This is why if you hire Feng Shui practitioners from different schools, you may get totally opposite readings if facing/ sitting measurement methods are different.

Unfavorable House Sitting and Facing in terms of 12 Animals signs

Note:  The following is an excerpt from the chapter "Choosing the sitting and facing of a house" from "Advanced Visual Form Feng Shui" video correspondence course.

There are numerous ways to choose an “ideal” sitting and facing for a house utilizing different Feng Shui methods.  However, in this course we will limit the choices with some relatively easy to use methods

A.    CHOOSING SITTING/FACING BASED ON ONE’S ANIMAL SIGN
Animal sign refers to the 12 Chinese zodiac animal signs based on one’s birth year.  People born before Feb. 4th are considered being born in previous year.  If you do not know your Chinese animal sign, you may check the following link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_zodiac

Above diagram also shows the elemental nature of each animal and its corresponding “clashing” animal.  For example, the elemental nature of mouse is water and horse is fire.  Water and fire clash— so people with mouse animal sign should not choose a house with South sitting (wu or horse direction) and North facing (zi or rat direction).

Above sitting and facing is called “personal ming clashing the sitting mountain”.  This can be interpreted as your inborn Feng Shui “magnetic imprint” clashing to that of the sitting of a house. You should avoid choosing a sitting/facing that is identical to your own animal sign.  If you do, you are likely to have limited advancement in life or simply working hard and achieving little.

There are more in-depth and detailed info on how to choose the best sitting/ facing in this chapter. For more info, please click the following link:

Top-3 Questions in Feng Shui Seminars

The followings are the top-3 questions asked by
students during my Feng Shui Seminars:

1. How to measure facing of a house/ apartment?
Depends on your teacher, it can be:
-- based on the main door
-- based on the yang side
-- based on the water side
-- based on the main gate of the building
-- based on the mountain side
...... and more fun choices!

2. How to change "heaven's heart" or Period of a
house/ apartment?
I have over ten recipes for this one, from very
expensive ones to almost free one:
-- major remodelling
-- open a hole in the roof and let the sun shine in
for over 49+ days
-- strike the center ceiling of an apartment until you
see steel bar...
-- stop cooking for a certain period of time
-- move out for at least 49 days
....... and more!

3. Do you put water in the NE side of your house?
Depends on your teacher, it could be:
-- OK to put water in NE
-- not OK to put water in NE
-- put fire, you idiot!
-- put horses, you smarty!
-- put what???

BTW, if you get good answers to these top-3 questions,
you may set up shop and drive me out of business :.)0
