Supercharge your kid's academic performance (Part 2) 读书风水2

Last week we have talked about academic positions based on 8-Mansions and Flying Star Feng Shui.  Now we will discuss academic positions based on the birth year stem of your kids.  This is a more personalized method of locating academic positions which does NOT change with time.

"Stems" and "branches" are the "ABC" of Chinese metaphysics.  There are 10 stems and 12 branches.  Most of us probably are familiar with "branches" because it also represents the 12 Chinese zodiac animals.  But in our case here, we look for the stem of the birth year.  Below is a simple method of finding out the birth year stem of your kid and the respective academic position:

For example, if your kid was born in 1991, check the table above for the row with "1", his birth year is "Xin" and his academic position is in the North.  Please note that birthday before February 4 is counted as previous year.  For instance, someone born in January 22, 1991 is considered born in 1990 based on the Chinese calendar. 

Between the 3 methods of locating academic positions, which one is the best?  According to Feng Shui people, the best would be the one based on the house sitting/facing, followed by Flying Star method and  the personalized one.   

It is not unusual to find your ideal location is occupied by a bathroom or kitchen or simply a missing corner.  You may use the second best location and so on.

Finally, avoid a house with bathroom in southeast sector because it is the academic location based on the Bagua or 8-Trigrams.  This is called "polluting Wen-chang".  Your kids will have problems in school.  You need to consult a Feng Shui practitioner to correct the problem.

Supercharge your kid's academic performance (Part 1) 读书风水1

With the current COVID-19 pandemic, most schools teach students through online learning.  Will your kids lose competitive advantages to other better equipped or smarter classmates?  Can you do something to enhance the learning capacity of your kids?

Feng Shui may help because there is an "academic position"  (Wen-chang 文昌位)in Feng Shui.  Putting your kid in this position to do their study will enhance his/ her learning capacity and IQ.

There are more than three ways to locate this academic position in your home.  This article shows two first.  The article next week will disclose the third one and which method is more effective.

I.  ACADEMIC POSITION BASED ON HOUSE SITTING/FACING

This method is based on Bazhai or 8-Mansions Feng Shui.  First you need to figure out the "sitting" and "facing" directions of your home.

The main door of your house is the "facing direction".  The opposite side of your main door is the "sitting" of the house.  Below are the "academic position" (AP for short) of:

1. Sitting North facing South, the AP is in NE
2. Sitting South facing North, the AP is in South
3. Sitting East facing West, the AP is in NW
4. Sitting West facing East, the AP is in SW
5. Sitting SE facing NW, the AP is SW
6. Sitting NW facing SE, the AP is in East
7. Sitting NE facing SW, the AP is in North
8. Sitting SW facing NE, the AP is in West

II.  ACADEMIC POSITION BASED ON ANNUAL ACADEMIC STAR

This method is based on the Annual chart of Flying Star Feng Shui.  Find the location of annual 4-green star (best) or 1-water star and put your kid there to study to boost academic performance.  You may find a Flying Star calculator or following the following table to find the 4 and 1 star locations.   Remember these stars change location every year.

Bazhai Feng Shui Secrets

Bazhai or 8-Mansions Feng Shui is one of the oldest Feng Shui schools in China.  It started around the "Spring and Autumn Warring States" period (770 to 221 BC).

The original Bazhai creators probably were the grand-daddy of positive thinking movement.  They did not label negative sectors of a house as "inauspicious" but using "little auspicious 小吉", "less auspicious 玄吉" and "least auspicious 幺吉" instead.

When the Japanese ambassador requested China for Feng Shui help in around 7th century (Tang Dynasty),  the Chinese emperor had ordered a rewrite of Bazhai to make sure our Japanese friends understand those not so auspicious sectors are actually bad sectors.  This gives rise to modern version of Bazhai with the inauspicious sectors clearly labeled as negative--  "death 绝命", "six-killing 六煞" and "disaster 祸害".

Basic premise of Bazhai Feng Shui is pretty simple-- matching the magnetic profile of a person to the magnetic profile of a house.  There are only two magnetic profiles:  east-4-group and west-4-group.  An individual's magnetic profile or ming-gua is determined by his birth year whereas a house is determined by its facing and sitting direction.  Good Feng Shui is when a east-4-group person lives in a east-4-group house,  A Feng Shui mismatch occurs when a east-4-group person lives in a west-4-group house.

While determining the magnetic profile or ming-gua of a person is straight-forward, for the house is a big mess or merry-go-round situation, especially with the changing definition of facing in modern architecture.

To do Bazhai Feng Shui, the first step is to determine the "Fu Wei 伏位" or "stability" sector of a house.  Essentially this is similar to determine the sitting and facing in other Feng Shui schools.

Below are different ways of determine the "Fu Wei 伏位" :

1.  Sitting determines house profile:  the opposite side of door-facing direction is the sitting direction.  For example, if the door-facing of a house is SE, the sitting will be NW or Qian palace, the house is a Qian house or a west-4-group house.  NW or Qian sector is  "Fu Wei 伏位" or "stability" sector of the house.  NW is always has the qi of NW. Hence this method is based on magnetic field
2.  Main door facing determines house profile:   For example, if the main door is in SE or Xun palace, the house is a Xun house or a east-4-group house.  SE or Xun sector is  "Fu Wei 伏位" or "stability" sector of the house.  This method is based on energy or qi-flow.  The main "qi-mouth" is in Xun. 
3.  Resident's ming-gua determines house profile:   For example, the house resided by a person with Li ming-gua will be a Li or east-4-group house.  The south or Li sector will be the "Fu Wei 伏位".  This method is based on the theory that Feng Shui will not operate without the resident and should be people-centered.
4.  The tallest sector of the house determines house profile:  For example, if west side of the house is tallest, that sector will be the "Fu Wei 伏位" and he house is a Dui house.  This is based on the tallest sector is the most dominant sector.

The methods listed above contain valid arguments.  But which one should one use?  I think it all depends on individual situation.  For example, in a retail business, the main door traffic flow is important, using main door facing is likely more relevant.  For residence, main door traffic is not as important as the house magnetic influence.  Same arguments are also applicable to other Feng Shui methods like Flying star and the like.  Consult your teacher or my "Practical Door Feng Shui" course for more inspirations.

Frankenstein Feng Shui or Pure Bred Feng Shui

My student asks me this question that probably most of the Feng Shui students want to know but are afraid to ask:

"What are your thoughts when it comes to having several Feng Shui techniques/ schools of thought in a practitioner's toolkit when selecting or auditing a house? Is it more advisable to use one technique/ lineage/ school over others, or use a combination -- for example,  some masters screen using 8 mansions first, then combine with flying stars etc. Does combining or using a single li-qi (formula) technique make any difference."

Here is my translation of this long question in one sentence:  Which one is better--  Frankenstein vs. pure bred Feng Shui approach?

FRANKENSTEIN FENG SHUI
The classic western movie "Frankenstein" is about a mad scientist who had created a monster out of body parts from different corpses.

Frankenstein Feng Shui is the application of 2 or more Feng Shui schools techniques in a Feng Shui audit.  The most common one is mixing of Flying Stars and Bazhai (8-mansions) Feng Shui in an audit.

On the positive side, if the practitioner knows the specialty or strong points of each Feng Shui school, s/he may apply, for example:  Bazhai in kitchen, San He for bed arrangement, XKDG for door, Flying Star for wealth enhancement,... and the like.

On the negative side, some practitioners do not really understand the Feng Shui schools and haphazardly apply different Feng Shui schools techniques in their audits.  For example, I have seen quite a few "tilt it again Sam" doors in Malaysia and Singapore.  Some "masters" set up two doors at different angles in a house or business.  The first door is tilted for the auspicious Bazhai angle and the second door for Flying Star.  It is as if the qi entering the premise is "smart" and can distinguish the first door is for Bazhai, second door for Flying Star Feng Shui and "behave" accordingly.

PURE BRED FENG SHUI
"Pure bred" here means loosely as "one school only".  In reality, there is really no pure bred Feng Shui because most Feng Shui schools "borrow" something from others.  For example, the popular Flying Star has more than 10+ variations, so is Bazhai.

Is pure bred better than Frankenstein Feng Shui?  The answer is both "yes" and "no".

Every Feng Shui system has its own peculiar properties that works well with certain land forms, like some methods work better with mountain regions while others with flat-land or river regions.  Hence when there is a match between land form and a pure bred Feng Shui School, the results will be great.  If not, the opposite happens.

SEMI-PURE BRED OR VOTING FENG SHUI
In this brand of Feng Shui, the practitioner employs one Feng Shui school only, but takes references to other schools' judgment on each Feng Shui sector.  For example, if Flying Star thinks this door location is great but Bazhai says it sucks and IF this practitioner only considers two school (one + and one minus), this location still "usable" or "OK".  If both schools agree that this location is bad, then remedy is sought or not using this location.  If both schools think this location is great, then this location must be very good.

"Ken, what is your position on this topic?"

Before I put on a Frankenstein or pure bred hat (I should market a "Make Feng Shui Great Again" hat),  I check the Bazi or 4-pillars chart of the client first.  If s/he is in good luck period, I will tell him just pick whatever house s/he likes and fire the Feng Shui guy (me).

If client is in average or low luck period,  I would use Form Feng Shui first.  Formula Feng Shui will not work if the forms are not there!  If the forms look good with the 4-animals and right forms, the Feng Shui of that property should not be bad.

I would cherry-pick the best feature of different Feng Shui schools.  "Fran-ken-stein" has my name inside.

"Ken, you sound like pushing your Feng Shui courses by advocating Frankenstein Feng Shui."

You are so smart.  If you can only afford one Feng Shui course, take the "Advanced Visual Form Feng Shui" listed below.  Feng Shui teachers can cheat you with formula Feng Shui because you cannot see li-qi or formula.  Form Feng Shui is what you see is what you get-- everyone can see forms like mountains and rivers.

"Fire Burning Heaven's Gate" in Feng Shui 火烧天门

Northwest or Qian direction is the "heaven" or ruler direction in "post-heaven" Bagua.  Hence Qian is also known as "heaven's gate" in Feng Shui.

Generally speaking, when a kitchen or stove is located in the NW or Qian sector of a house, it has "fire burning heaven's gate" Feng Shui problem.

Qian is metal in nature.  It stands for the head, respiratory system, career and oldest male in the house. With "fire burning heaven's gate" Feng Shui, the residents of this house are likely to suffer head injuries/ sickness, mental illness, respiratory problem, rebellious children, lung or brain cancer, fire and career problems.  The oldest male is the likely victim though young girl and boy can also suffer.

There are more than one type of "fire burning heaven's gate"

TYPES OF "FIRE BURNING HEAVEN'S GATE"
1.  Xuan Kong Flying Star versions:
a.  when 9-purple star flies to NW (Qian palace)
b.  when 6-white metal star flies to the south (Li Palace)

2.   Bazhai or 8-Mansions Feng Shui version:
--  when Wu-gui (5-ghosts, also known as Lian-zhen star, fire in nature) lands on NW.  For example, a house with Mao (East) sitting and You-facing (West).

3.  General Feng Shui versions:
a.  when kitchen, stove, fridge, TV, computer or electronic items  indoor OR outdoor tall objects like power tower, tall building, chimney....etc, are located in NW sector 
b.  when kitchen, stove, fridge, TV, computer or electronic items  indoor OR outdoor tall objects like power tower, tall building, chimney....etc, are located in the south sector. 

How do you fix this "fire burning heaven's gate" problem?  Obviously, move the kitchen or related hot items out of NW or the south.

"Ken, how about if we cannot relocate the kitchen or these objects, especially the outdoor ones?"

There are remedies and simple fixes for it that cost little or almost next to nothing.  Simply consult a Feng Shui professional or your teacher.

Surviving construction at 5-yellow disaster star location

A few weeks ago, I was waken up by loud machinery noises of cutting and hammering from outside my home.  I went out and found that my dragon side (left) neighbor has contracted a construction firm to replace the vinyl siding and roof of his house.  Both were damaged by a hail storm earlier and insurance pays for the repair.  Essentially this neighbor has a "skin replacement" for his house.

Besides waking me up early for a week or more (I am a night owl), the biggest problem I see was a big part of his house is in the north-east side of my house.  5-yellow disaster star is in the NE this year.  Excessive noises and movement may instigate the wrath of this star, causing injury, accident, losing wealth and even death.

5-yellow star is earth in nature, the fix usually is metal or coin-salt solution.

I have searched my house for possible remedies and found a gold-colored calabash and some Chinese Qian-long coins.  Qian-long was one of the emperors during China's Qing Dynasty. This combination should do the job.

Normally I put six coins in a circle shape to neutralize 5-yellow star.  I was too lazy to take 6 coins out of my string inventory of coins.  So I have used all the coins (around 60) in the string and put it on top of the calabash.  I put this remedy combination in the NE region facing the construction site.   You may use your own local copper or brass coins instead.  Just make sure the denomination of the coin is not 25 cents, 5 cents, two dollars or 5 dollars each.

This roofing and siding job has taken about 10 days.  I am still in one piece and no major mishaps happened.  However, my sales suffered during the period.  But this is still better than losing an arm or leg.  You win some and lose some.
