How a disabled member affects Feng Shui

Earlier this month, the story of a 63 years old Brad Weldon and his 90 years old blind and immobile mother refused to evacuate from the Californian wild fire in his Paradise neighborhood grabs my attention.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/angels-were-here-to-watch-us-man-and-his-mother-survive-california-wildfire-1.4177913

Their house is the only house left surviving the fire in the neighborhood.  According to news report:

Brad Weldon and his 90 years old blind mother
".... the flames came so close that Weldon laid down on the ground and turned the hose on himself – just hoping that the water would be enough to keep him alive.....Weldon says that with a change of wind, and 'angels here to watch us,' he and his mother escaped death........The fire has killed at least 50 people. More than 100 others are missing -- all of them from Paradise."

Over the years, some Feng Shui practitioners and me have observed an interesting phenomenon that a family with a disabled member (esp. if s/he cannot self-care), is more likely spared from major natural or man-made disasters.

A Taiwan master had observed a street sits on void line (bad Feng Shui) has all shops closed down except one that has a disabled member in the family.  In other words, a disabled family member can override negative Feng Shui.

I have also observed from my own relatives to people from other social circles that families with disabled members usually will survive in almost any economic condition.

This is based on a heaven or universal rule of "averaging"-- avoid granting too "perfect" or "imperfect" destinies to earthlings.  The common image of this phenomenon is seeing rich people with poor health and poor people with good health or rich people with no heir and poor people with many kids.

There is a saying in Chinese with similar meaning about this universal rule:

"Heaven would not fail a person.  Find one's way out from an impasse."
-- "天無绝人之路"

Hence, if your family has a disabled member, s/he probably is your Feng Shui insurance for avoiding catastrophe and economic hardship.  If you feel your current situation is less than satisfactory, it could be worse without this disabled member!

Earth's shifting magnetic pole may throw your house into void line

I have just read an article about earth's shifting magnetic pole affecting the runway labels of Boeing airfield.

http://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/pilots-check-your-bearings-boeing-field-catches-up-with-earths-magnetic-field/

This article quotes NASA, ".... the magnetic north pole has crept northward by more than 600 miles since the early 19th century and is currently migrating northward about 40 miles per year.  When the magnetic poles shift more than five degrees, the rounded numbers used to designate runways need to be changed."

This natural phenomenon also affects Feng Shui measurements because Feng Shui formula (li-qi) depends on magnetic field.

If your house is sitting around the middle of a "mountain" (15 degrees region), shifting 1 or 2 degrees may not change the Feng Shui conditions much.  But if the house is within 2.5 degrees to the borderline of a mountain, it could fall into the "replacement star" region and even worse, small void line and even big void line (depending on the mountain).  Read the following blog articles for what happens if your house sits on a void line.

Therefore, one should have a new Feng Shui audit once every few years or at least do another magnetic measurement, to make sure your house does not fall into a void line. Read the following link of my void line articles for what happens if your house sits on a void line and other factors that may push your house into a void line other than earth's shifting magnetic pole.

Effects of house facing void line

My last time writing on void lines was in 2002.  Time to do some green business.

When the facing degree of a house is at the borderline of two "mountains" (24 sectors defined in Feng Shui), it is called sitting on a void line.  House sitting on a void line does not collect "qi" that is essential for the prosperity and well-being of the residents.  For definitions and varieties of void lines, please read these old blog articles:

http://kenlaifengshui.blogspot.com/2007/08/kun-mang-or-void-lines.html
http://kenlaifengshui.blogspot.com/2007/08/blog-post_1391.html
http://kenlaifengshui.blogspot.com/2007/08/blog-post_1904.html

Some major effects of void lines are:
  • familial disharmony and divorces
  • fluctuating luck- big ups and down; bad wealth luck
  • legal problems and imprisonment
  • accidents and surgeries
  • nightmares, especially those involving ghosts and spirits
  • "seeing" spirits or ghosts even during daytime
  • unexpected and rare disasters like airline crash
  • stagnated career or business
  • disloyal or rebellious subordinates

Small void lines or the ones between 24 mountains are possible to fix by relocating doors and qi-paths.  Big void lines or the borderlines between two trigrams are not fixable.  The best cure is moving.

Shopping Center FS mystery

Note: The following was written on Aug. 22, 2004

In 2001, Frank Nursery, a regional flower chain store had filed bankruptcy and had closed some stores.

One of the stores was pretty closed to where I live.

That store was in a pretty new (less than 10 years old) shopping center with major tenants like Target Greatland, TJ Max, Rainbow and Pet Smart. It is a pretty big shopping center.

This Frank store was next to a Pet Smart store. But it is at the edge of left side of the center, so there is no neighbor at the left side of Frank. To make things worse, the left side is a "sunken" slope or sunken dragon. The right side of the store is the right hand side neighbors, meaning strong tigers.

The "ming-tang" is a huge parking lot, which is as big as 4 football fields.

There is no back support for all the stores at this side because they were all built on top of a slope.

2004 is almost over in a few months, the original Frank store location is still vacant since 9/ 2001.

So why can’t shopping center owner lease this space out? In terms of monetary losses, it could be easily over $2M of rental losses.

I take a compass reading-- 270 degree, big void line!

But how come its right side neighbors Pet Smart and TJ Max are doing well??

I let you figure out the reasons.

Urban Form Feng Shui

Note: The following was written on April 22, 2004

About 10 years ago, the MGM Casino in Las Vegas had a big entrance that was shaped like the mouth of a lion.Eventually, the casino took the mouth down as Asian customers, esp. Chinese, do not like the idea of walking into the mouth of a lion, implying losing big to the casino.Chinese are known to be big "whales" there.

When I was in Hong Kong last month, there is a building entrance (see enclosed photo) shaped like the mouth of a monster-- 2 sharp silver color teeth at the door and 2 while eye balls on top (Rhino mouth and crab eyes combined?).
However, people do not seemed to notice it. Even my relative who works nearby was shocked when I told him the entrance looks like a giant mouth.

The section of the street is in Monkok's second busiest cross-junction, with traffic (people/car flow) comparable to that of New York's Time Square. The real estate price there is probably within the top 5 of the most expensive land in the world.
So how do the businesses fare in that building? According to my relative, businesses inside that building come and go pretty quick due to slow traffic.
So do people subconsciously feel walking into the mouth of a monster and avoiding going inside? Or is the "earth luck" (di yun) of the building expired?
I took a luopan reading outside the entrance. The degree is not that bad.
I went into the building. Most businesses were not opened even it was a weekday afternoon. But the "qi" inside was pretty stagnant.

Amazingly, there is a Feng Shui practitioner there who does everything (date selection, Feng shui, face/palm reading, divination, naming.....). But apparently he forgot to Feng Shui his office before moving in.

I walked around the building and eventually find out the reason-- the building is on a void-line.

As to how I find out the void line, it will be discussed in my classes.

HEAVEN, EARTH AND HUMAN GUA/ DRAGON

Note: This was written on July 31, 2004

Someone has asked about "heaven plate" yesterday. Here is an excerpt from the course manual "P8 Upgrade Toolkit".

HEAVEN, EARTH AND HUMAN GUA/ DRAGON
In the beginning, luopan had only 8 directions or the 8 trigrams (Qian, Kun, Zhen, Xun, Kan, Li, Gen and Dui). To make the measurement more precise, the ancients subdivided each trigram (45 degrees) into 3 regions of 15 degrees. These regions are called “mountains”.

1. People may confuse “heaven” gua must be all “heavenly stems” directions.
2. 24 mountains is another “representation” of post-heaven Bagua—each trigram of the Bagua handles 3 mountains. So it is essentially another way of “Na Jia”.
3. For the heavenly stems, only 8 stems are used because wu and ji are “earth” and assigned to the center. All 12 earthly branches are utilized.
4. However, there are only 12 + 8 = 20 mountains; we still need four more mountains to “fill” up the 24 directions.
5. Qian, Kun, Gen and Xun, which happens to be at the 4 “corners” of the bagua, are drafted into the 24 mountains.
6. 3 groups of “mountains” are divided according to the location and “purity” :
Heaven gua (yin): zi, wu, mao and yao
Heaven gua (yang): Qian, Kun, Gen and Xun

These eight mountains are considered as “pure” because of their location.

The yin group locates on the “4 cardinal points” and the yang group in the 4 corner locations with no mixture of other directional qi

Earth gua (yin): chen, xu, chou and wei (the 4 “tombs” or storages)
Earth gua (yang): jia, geng, bing and ren
Human gua (yin): yi, xin, ding and gui
Human gua (yang): yin, shen, si and hai

Characteristics of these guas:
HEAVEN GUA -- specialized prosperity, esp. in fame and social mobility
EARTH GUA -- quick and fast prosperity, esp. in academic performance
HUMAN GUA -- long term prosperity, esp. in wealth aspects

KUN MANG OR VOID LINES

The following was written on Nov 2, 2002

Void line is an advanced topic rarely discussed in detail even in Chinese Feng Shui books. Yet it has important effects on the Feng Shui of a house. So I'll post this on the lists that I know of.

DEFINITION OF VOID LINE
It is damn simple and no need to mystery it-- the borderline between two guas (trigrams) or mountains is the void line.
TYPES OF VOID LINES
A. Big Void Lines: 8 lines total, the borders between the 8 trigrams (qian, kan, gen, zhen, xun, li, kun, dui) are the "big void lines".
B. Small Void Lines: 24 lines total, the borders between the 24 mountains (ren, zi, gui, chou, gen, and so on).
C. Turtle Shell or Gui Jia Void lines: 8 lines total, details not disclosed here

WHY VOID LINE IS BAD
The border line of any 2 gua or 2 mountains is like a no-man's land-- its neither yang nor yin. In one short sentence to describe why void line sucks-- it has NO qi coming.
The cornerstone of Feng Shui is the qi theory. All living things need qi (wuxing) to survive and run their life cycles. Qi brings both good and bad fortune to people. When one lives on a void line and receives no or little qi, his/ her fortune will be negative.
Who can live on void lines? Spirits, ghosts and gods are not restricted by wuxing and yang-yin (do not need qi), so churches and temples can be built on void lines. Some famous Chinese temples are built on certain type of void line (metal void line).
RANKING THE VOID LINES
One should avoid the big void lines at any cost-- only temples and churches can handle it. Small void lines are more manageable. But avoid it nonetheless. It is not uncommon for new houses or houses that have been vacant for 2+ years to be on small void lines. When people move in and remodeling done, the angle will shift.
