How to determine current year is good or bad for you?

In Bazi,  one's natal chart determines the "quality" of the chart.  But it is only part of the destiny pie.  A "good quality" chart still "sucks" if its luck periods do not bring in the elements that the chart needs to prosper.

There are two types of "luck period"-- the "10-years luck" (10YL) and "annual luck" (AL).  10YL is calculated in terms of one's birth month, which is different from person to person.  10YL provides the backdrops or "climate" of one's luck within that 10-years period.

Annual luck means one's overall luck for current year. In Bazi, everyone shares the same AL.  For example, current year 2017 is ding-you (fire-rooster) year.  Every person in the world is subject to the influences of the same annual luck of ding-you.  If fire and metal are favorable to one's chart, one will enjoy better luck within 2017.  If otherwise, one's luck will be below average.  The important thing about AL is:  Any fortune or misfortune will be triggered by AL because it brings the favorable or unfavorable elements to the chart.

In this post, we will keep it simple by focusing on how annual luck affects your luck:

1.  AL "fan-yin" or "fu-yin" 10YL:  "Fan-yin" means stem clashing stem and branch clashing branch between two pillars.  "Fu-yin" means two identical pillars.  Fan-yin and fu-yin usually are unfavorable to the daymaster (DM) and jinx his/her close relatives.
2.  Strong DM with AL brings in wealth, power and output (cai, guan and shi-shang) elements means favorable fortune for the year.  But if AL brings in resource and/ or peer (yin or bi-jian) elements, it means misfortune for the year.
3.  Weak DM with AL brings in resource and/ or peer (yin and bi-jian) elements means favorable fortune for the year.  But if AL brings in wealth, power and/ or output (cai, guan and shi-shang) elements, it means misfortune for the year.
4.  10YL is favorable with AL brings in zheng-cai (+wealth), zheng-guan (+power), zheng-yin (+resource), shi-shen (-output), and/ or bi-jian (-peer),  means current year fortune will be enhanced even further.  If AL brings in jie-cai (+peer), qi-sha (-power), pian-yin (-resource) and/ or shang-guan (+output), means current year fortune will be mixed with both good and bad fortune.
5.  10YL is unfavorable with AL brings in zheng-cai (+wealth), zheng-guan (+power), zheng-yin (+resource), shi-shen (-output), and/ or bi-jian (-peer),  means current year fortune will have minor fortunes but major mishaps.  If AL brings in jie-cai (+peer), qi-sha (-power), pian-yin (-resource) and/ or shang-guan (+output), means current year fortune will be very bad.
6.  AL stem/ branch combine with day pillar is generally considered good luck for the year.  AL fan-yin  (clashing stems and branches) or fu-yin (identical pillars) day-pillar is generally negative for DM because it affects DM and the spouse palace directly.  Usually this means something going on with marital relationship or personal sickness/ disaster.
7.  The stem and branch of AL are favorable elements ("yong-shen") of the natal chart would imply the year will be auspicious or fortunate.  If unfavorable ("ji-shen"), the year will be below average or unfortunate.

Anyway, the above is a rough guideline for making annual luck interpretations.  You still have to take the whole chart and both luck periods into consideration to make more accurate predictions.

What every astrologer should not do

It is quite common for astrologers, especially the beginners, to write or blog on celebrities and famous people.

Two days ago (April 21, 2016) was Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday.  UK's Embassy in Hong Kong had posted the queen's birth certificate on Facebook showing that she was born in April 21, 1926 at 2:40 am.

Hong Kong was a former British colony and people there are still fond of the royal family.  A Hong Kong newspaper has invited celebrity astrologer Master Mak Ling Ling to read the Bazi chart of the Queen Elizabeth II.  Mak has been in Feng Shui and Bazi business since 1996 and had penned over 20 Feng Shui and Bazi books.  She shows up in TV and radio shows regularly.

Queen Elizabeth II's birth certificate

This is the Queen's Bazi chart:

Year:  Bing-yin
Month:  Ren-chen
Day:  Geng-chen
Hour:  Ding-chou

Here is Master Mak's reading about the queen:

"The Queen has a metal daymaster.  She has very strong wealth luck because the birth season is spring.  She does not need to worry about food and clothing throughout her life.  This is an ultra rich and ultra noble chart."
麥玲玲....發現事頭婆屬金，春天出生的她財運極旺，一生衣食無憂，是大富大貴之格局。

Mak said the British queen was born in a Kui Gang day(魁罡日) which implies leadership abilities and being respected by the people.  "She has two Kui Gang stars in her chart.  With one Kui Gang star is very noble already."  But Mak also commented that people with Kui Gang star are dominant and self-centered.  So relationship with her children and daughter-in-laws will be less than satisfactory.
麥說英女皇的出生為魁罡日，有領導才能，受人敬重，「佢有兩個魁罡星，有一個已經好貴氣」，但她說魁罡星很霸氣，個人獨旺，子女及兒媳關係則會較差。

Do you know what's wrong with this reading even if you know nothing about Bazi astrological reading?

The online readers of this newspaper have a field day poking fun at this reading.  Here are some examples:

"What an idiot!  The whole world knows the Queen does not need to worry about food and clothing...."
"正一白痴，全世界的人都知女皇衣食無休啦"

"Quite accurate reading.... hahaha..."
算得又幾準啵… 哈哈哈…

"My prediction is better (than Mak's), I know she would be the British Queen a long time ago."
我仲勁，一早知佢會做英女王。

"My reading also predicts the Queen at least lives till 90!!"
我也算到英女皇最少 90 歲命呢！！

"My own reading predicts that (the queen) at least lives till 90 with many children and grand-children, worry-free living throughout her whole life and enjoys good reputation.  This is a born to be queen chart."
我算到佢至少90歲命，仲兒孫滿堂，一生衣食無憂，享有名譽，生成一條皇后命

Master Mak must have forgotten that Queen Elizabeth II is already 90 years old.   Mak is in a no-win situation even if she has honestly predicted the Queen's life.  Most people in the world already know her life history.

我算到佢至少90歲命，仲兒孫滿堂，一生衣食無憂，享有名譽，生成一條皇后

Maiden Boys and Girls 童子命

There are birth charts of certain people, regardless of methods,  cannot be read accurately by any astrological methods.  According to Chinese belief, these people are believed to be the “maiden boys/ girls” 童子/ 童女  (similar to the child angels concept in the west) who serve the deities in heaven or temples.  The “golden boy and jade girl” standing next to Guan-yin or Avalokiteśvara statue in Chinese temples are two examples.

A maiden chart is hard to read because there is another "being" in the body of the chart owner.  However,  this "being" is not malicious like a ghost.

These celestial people come to earth or are banished to earth because:

• lust  (there are still lust and desire in Samsara level of heaven)
• due to curiosity and sneak out to earth without authorization
• rule violations
• are sent to earth officially for some missions to help humanity

Because of the time differentials between heaven and earth, a lifetime on earth is just a few days in heaven.  Sending some unruly "little angels" in heaven to the earth for "a few days" and experience some earthly sufferings is a good learning experience or punishment.

These maiden boys and girls show some of the following characteristics:

• handsome/ pretty, smart
• prone to sickness and die young, may not live over 40
• problems in communication, not sociable
• spiritual, likely be psychic-- interest in metaphysics and religions
• suffer in relationship/ marital life with many tragic stories

In some aspects, these "maiden boys and girls" are similar to the "indigo children" in the west.

There are a few formulas to figure out if a Bazi chart is a “maiden chart” or not.

I found people interested in metaphysics and religion are likely to have a "maiden chart".   My own chart is also a "maiden chart".

There are Daoist rituals to "send away" the maiden "hidden" in the body of a maiden boy/ girl.  So that the person involved can live a normal life.

If you want to find out if you have a "maiden chart", you can donate US$30 ($15 for unemployed or under-employed, tax deductible) to UNICEF  (United Nation Children's Fund), forward me (kenlai88@yahoo.com) the receipt or acknowledgement email and send me your birthday and hour with city of birth.  I will check your chart to see if you are a "maiden boy or girl".  Below is the link to make your donation.

Please be aware that I will not read your chart other than ascertaining if you have a maiden chart.
