Mountain and Water

Buddhists have 3 levels of perceptions of reality:

One sees a mountain. It is a mountain to him.  One sees water.  It is water to him.
看山是山，看水是水；

The mountain one sees is not a mountain and water is not water.
看山不是山，看水不是水；

This mountain is still a mountain no matter how one looks at it, so is the water.
看山還是山，看水還是水。

Our perception of reality revolves around these 3 levels.

What I want to see.
What the society has conditioned me to see.
What my inner self really sees.

Is reality real?
Buddha says reality is a reflection of our heart (mind).

Love Story of the Year-- Geese Lovers

On last Valentines Day (Feb. 14, 2016), someone in China has posted the pictures of two geese "goodbye kissing" with a poem:

Kissing my love goodbye 与君吻离别，
Sending you off to the village exit 相送到村口，
Sunset stretching our shadows 夕阳长身影，
From now on we are separated forever 自此各天涯！

These pictures become viral in the Chinese internet and are re-posted by numerous news agencies in China. Netizens said these are the most touching photos of 2016 Valentines Day.  They lamented that life is similar to the fate of these two geese lovers.  One wrong turn or incident may end a relationship forever.  "We should treasure the nice people around us now and not after we have lost them."

Reporters have located the owner of these two geese-- Miss Deng of Guangdong Province.  Her parents had raised these geese for over a year in their ancestral village.

On the second day of Lunar New Year (Feb. 9, 2016), her father had gifted the female goose to his relative.  Mr. Deng had tied up the goose, put her in a paper box and further wrapped the box with a bag.  He then tied the whole box to the back of his motorcycle.  The male goose was agitated and attempted to untie the strings wrapped around the female goose with his beck.  Miss Deng was very surprised by the male goose's behavior.  His action was very affectionate too.  He also honked sadly as if begging the master to release the female goose.

The Deng family members also felt sad to send the goose off.  But their relative had rushed them to bring the goose for dinner.  Eventually the female goose was delivered to the relative and become part of the new year dinner.

What has happened to the male goose?  He was slaughtered later too.  Miss Deng said her parents will leave the village to the city to work, leaving no one to take care of the goose.  They took care of business by putting him into their stomachs.

Miss Deng hopes that netizens could understand that the final destiny of family raised geese-- becoming food.

Many readers have posted poems to memorialize these two geese lovers.  Some even created follow-up stories with their imagination and Photoshop skills.  Below is one of the popular ones.

While these two lover geese cannot "rest in peace", but at least they are now meeting in geese heaven.  We thank them for teaching us a lesson about love and living our lives.  Maybe this is the mission of their current lifetime.  We pray for them to move on to a higher realm of being in their next lives.

A conversation on the Chinese character "hate"

Ken says:
Tell you something interesting--- the Chinese character "HATE" (恨 hèn) has the heart prefix and GEN suffix.

Ken says:
Heart prefix means heart or "thought", GEN suffix as in the Gen trigram, which means stagnation or stopped. When you hate, your heart stops.

Ken says:
When you kick away the heart prefix, then you stop hating! The word is no longer "hate".

Friend says:
Interesting.

Friend says:
Stopping the heart

Friend says:
Pretty much correct

Friend says:
Actually westerners talk about mind. Easterners talk about xin or heart. But they are talking about the same thing.

Ken says:
Yes.

Friend says:
In the end, it is neither.

Friend says:
Because mind is associated with brain. Heart is associated with feelings and the physical heart.

Friend says:
The thing that is discussed is actually a formless thing, almost like a ghost or water.

Friend says:
Water has no form until you put it in a container.

Friend says:
Same with conscious awareness.

Friend says:
Enlightenment simply means free-- not attached to the container.

Friend says:
That's why Lao Zi talks about behaving like water.

Ken says:
Bruce Lee liked to say something similar, "Open your mind, be water, be formless, be shapeless. If water is poured into a cup, it has the shape of a cup. If water is poured into a teapot, it has the shape of a teapot."

Summer bugs and snow

Note: The following was written on July 25, 2003

Some people on this and other list have accused me of doing Feng Shui analysis without going inside the site. These people were taught the ONLY way to do Feng Shui is to go both inside and outside the house.

I do not say this is incorrect. However, this is NOT the only way.

There is a Feng Shui school called "Golden Lock and Jade Case" (GLJC, also known as "pass-by Yin-Yang) which is very popular in mainland China, especially in southern China, can audit a house without going inside.

GLJC is very form-oriented and has its own definitions of water and mountains. By observing the water and sand (mountains) of the external environment of a house, a GLJC master can pell out what had happened inside the house.

During ancient times, GLJC method was used by some traveling masters to get the foot (and food) into the doors of their potential customers. They walked into a village and told the people what had happen in this house and that house, blah blah blah and amazed the people to wine and dine them.

Like any other Feng Shui schools, GLJC has its own limitations. Its limitations are the advantages of flying stars and its strengths are the limitations of flying stars. Mainland Chinese masters are trying to integrate flying stars and GLIC in their audits.

There is a saying in Chinese, "summer bugs cannot possibly talk about snow, not because there is no snow, but they have never seen snow."

Have you seen some summer bugs on the lists lately?

Some day I may teach GLJC to people with the right karma.

BRUCE LEE & Feng Shui

Note: The following was written on Oct. 22, 2002

Don't worry, I'm not doing an audit of Bruce Lee's former home in Hong Kong. There are so many "guess-timations" already.

I watched AMC's (Am. Movie Classic Channel) "TV for Movie People" tonight. It is about how Bruce Lee developed his "Arts of Intercepting Fists" and the filming of his last movie, "The Game of Death".

It is interesting that the problems Bruce ran into, are so similar to the development of Chinese Feng Shui in the western world.

Bruce was a non-conformist in the Chinese martial arts world. He refused to abide by the old traditions and formula of different Chinese martial arts schools. He said what traditional martial arts taught were unrealistic in real life situations, like the step-by-step procedures in fighting.

He emphasized flexibility in learning to fit real life situations.

Bruce had studied different schools of martial arts and then developed his own style of Kung Fu. If you are familiar with martial arts, you could see he had used styles from many schools in his last film, "The Game of Death".

Same philosophy can be applied to learning Feng Shui. Currently, some Feng Shui trainers promote pseudo-scientific Feng Shui which fossilizes students' mind-- "if the method is not listed in ancient Feng Shui classics, then it is not real Feng Shui." "This is not scientific or logical!"

These trainers, in a way like Rush Limbaugh (right wing radio personality, who claims he has a monopoly on truth), have a monopoly on "scientific Chinese Feng Shui" based on their limited knowledge base.

Bruce said, "Open your mind, be water, be formless, be shapeless. If water is poured into a cup, it has the shape of a cup. If water is poured into a teapot, it has the shape of a teapot." What Bruce meant is be flexible with an open mind and try as many new ideas as possible.

This philosophy applies to Feng Shui equally well-- try to learn from different Feng Shui schools, try new methods, try new fixes, and try not to be biased by any preconceived logic or theories.

While respecting your teachers is a must in learning Feng Shui, but do not think that they are infallible and blindly follow whatever they promote. As a general rule of thumb, if a particular teacher is more interested in collecting money or selling you craps than the intellectual development of his/her students, s/he is probably just an opportunist.

Viagra, Feng Shui Viagra and Joyagra

Note: The following was written on July 3, 2003

Yup, I know this title gets you excited. But hold your horse first.

Pfizer, the patent owner of Viagra, sues a little company, Joytime Herbal Tea Co. of Minneapolis, MN. Joytime sells an herbal tea called "Joyagra". Pfizer claims Joytime has violated its trademark and sue for damages.

What the hell does this lawsuit has to do with Feng Shui then? As you may know, some Feng Shui classes advertise "Feng Shui Viagra" trick will be taught there. So Pfizer can potentially sue these organizers for damages.

Well, if your "horn dog" fails to stand up, why don't you go to your doctor and beg for some free Viagra samples? It is a lot quicker and cheaper than shelling out a few hundred bucks to learn Feng Shui Viagra in a seminar.

Pretty soon I won't doubt we will have "Feng Shui cloning", "Feng Shui heart transplant", "Feng Shui breast augmentation", "Feng Shui hair-growing",..... Sound ridiculous? Yes, it is. A simple way to handle all these Feng Shui craps would be building a Feng Shui Temple and let's ask Feng Shui God for whatever we want, from bigger penis/ boobs to better paid jobs (make sure the job is close to where I live too, I don't want to drive too long to work). We no longer need health insurance or freaking hospitals, plastic surgeons, hair-transplant clinics......

The basic premise of Feng Shui is to live in harmony with nature, but now some of us portray it as a magic bullet for almost any problems, including lust and greed.

Is it Time for some introspection?

Feng Shui Hammer and Xuan Kong Flying Stars

If you give a kid a hammer, pretty soon he will try to do everything with a hammer.

On the other hand, a surgeon does not do a surgery with just a hammer. He may use a saw, scissors, cutters, drill and etc.

In the Feng Shui world today, the Feng Shui hammer is Xuan Kong Flying Stars (Feng Shui). To some people, XK Feng Shui is the universal key to any Feng Shui problem.

At the low end, some people, after taking a simple Flying Star correspondence course and rush out to do Feng Shui audits, because the author said that Flying Star is the "most advanced Feng Shui" method. We also see some people doing audits after reading the "Idiot's Guide to Feng Shui" book.

At the high end, we see some Feng Shui marketers selling expensive "Xuan Kong" classes at US$4-900 a day, boasting the "ultimate XK secrets" that can predict and cure anything, including hair loss.

Indeed, XK Feng Shui is great for doing shows-- I can walk into a house, do a XK Feng Shui audit, tell the owner what had happened in the past, predict the future and almost 100% sure I will hit something right. So XK Feng Shui is a great "show" tool for Feng Shui practitioners.

So what are the secrets behind this impressive "predictive power"? I'll tell you if you promise me that you won't tell any soul or some Feng Shui marketers will be out of business.

The secrets are in the interpretations of "81 combinations" and how to manipulate the stars in 9 palaces.

To make it easier to understand, let's assume we do horse-betting. If a race has 9 horses (flying star method has 9 stars), we bet on only 1 horse, the probability of winning is 1/9, 2 horses will be 2/9, 3 horses will be 1/3, and if you bet on all 9 horses, you will get the winning horses for sure.

In XK Feng Shui, each palace has 3 stars-- mountain star (ms), water star (ws) and period star (ps). In addition, we have annual star (as), di pan (dp) and even monthly star. This means we have the potential of getting 5 or 6 stars out of a total of 9 stars in one palace. So the odd is favorable to the guesser or practitioner.

Then the pot gets sweeter-- imagine you can guess not just once but 9 times-- 3 horses each time (3 stars in each palace, 9 palaces total) !

It is very difficult NOT to get something right.

Still don't get it? OK, let me list the potential combinations here (I omitted monthly star for

clarity):

ms with ws

ms with ps

ms with dp

ms with as
