Tony Chan, the lover of late Nina Wang, had lost the court battle for the control of Wang's huge estate.
Judge Lam concludes:
1. Someone had faked Wang's signature on the 2006 will that will give Chan control on her estate.
2. Lam has not made any determination if the will is a "Feng Shui will" or not.
3. Chan and Wang's relationship is strictly client and Feng Shui practitioner business relationship and that Wang's intention is to hide the love relationship forever.
4. Chan had pleasured Wang but Wang will not willed her empire to Chan.
So this sounds like a King Solomon type decision to bypass whether Feng Shui works or any supernatural argument.
The focal critical point of the whole battle is the authenticity of the 2006 will. The issue of "Feng Shui will" and the love relationships are side-tracks.
Nina Wang had willed her fortune to charity. So this is a victory for charity! But Chan's lawyers said they may appeal.
Tony Chan can be in a tough financial situation as the Hong Kong Tax authority can go after the income tax for the huge amount (almost US$400M) that Nina Wang had given him. I think Chan's original intention for this court battle is to get an out-of-court settlement without going through the court system.

The man who is both a Feng Shui genius AND a Feng Shui idiot

Is it possible for someone to be a Feng Shui genius AND Feng Shui idiot at the same time?
A case in point would be Nina Wang's $13 billion estate legal case in Hong Kong.
Tony Chan, Nina Wang's "secret lover", claims that Nina had paid him US$30M in cash and eventually willed her whole estate to him because of "love".
Nina's original heir, Chinachem Charity foundation claims that Nina paid US$30M to Tony for his "Feng Shui services" and NOT out of "love".
Each side of the litigating party has found their own "expert Feng Shui witness" to testify about the "prowness" or "lack of prowness" of Tony Chan's Feng Shui knowledge.
Tony Chan has hired the world famous traditional/ classical Feng Shui master Mr. YYZ. Based on Tony's Feng Shui practices of burning real paper money, digging of "Feng Shui holes", burying of ritualistic objects and Tony's secret Feng Shui manuscript, MR. YYZ concludes that Tony is "a Feng Shui master who does not know Feng Shui".
This conclusion is exactly what Tony's lawyer wants--- that Tony Chan does not know much about Feng Shui and hence, it is his charm or Nina's love that the latter willed her estate to Tony.
Incidentially, Mr. YYZ is also the co-author of "The complete idiot guide to Feng Shui" book.
Chinachem Charity has solicited the service of a Daoist Feng Shui master Mr. Szeto. 80% of the Macau casino Feng Shui jobs were done by him. He also hosts a few occult and supernatural cable TV shows in Hong Kong. So Mr. Szeto has the "home field advantage" and name-recognition here.
Mr. Szeto did not talk low about Tony Chan's Feng Shui practices. Instead, he explains the hidden meanings and rationale of each ritual objects used by Tony. Obviously, Tony does not do traditional but ritualistic Feng Shui.
Mr. Szeto has stopped short of saying Tony is a Feng Shui genius. After all, who in Feng Shui history has made more money than Tony Chan? Even Mr. Szeto has made a lot less than him!
So, did these two Feng Shui expert witnesses tell the truth?
In my opinion, both did tell the truth BASED on their own special perspective or bias. A traditional-trained Feng Shui master will definitely testify that someone who practice ritualistic Feng Shui is NOT real (or traditional) Feng Shui. It is just weird that Tony Chan's lawyers had hired a traditional Feng Shui master instead of a ritualistic one.
This case illustrates the diversity of Feng Shui practices and problems in defining what is "real Feng Shui". I think the business of "expert Feng Shui witness" will be a short-lived one.

We have been working for peanuts!
We Feng Shui people have been working for peanuts.
From the late Nina Wang estate lawsuit, it shows that Nina had paid HK$10M (US$1.3M) "bonus" to her Feng Shui consultant after his Feng Shui "formation" helped her win her late husband's estate (I may write about this FS "formation" when I have time).
But compare to this "little bonus", Tony Chan, the secret lover and litigant for the sole beneficiary of Nina's huge estate, got paid even "more".
According to the original heir of Nina, Chinachem charity, Nina had paid Chan a total of THREE payments of about HK$688 million (US$88.8 million) EACH for his Feng Shui service!
I guess this is the highest a Feng Shui guy has made in history-- US$270M in 15 years.
Chan claims that Nina had sent him cash by the truckloads!
For those who wants to know more about the juicy contents of this case, please read:
Foreign news reports often cut the Feng Shui part of the case. There are quite a few interesting Feng Shui details within and outside this case.
It is obvious that Chan's lawyers portray Chan as a Feng Shui idiot ("low level Feng Shui knowledge") and that it is "love" that Nina Wang willed the estate to him; whereas the heir said that Chan is good at Feng Shui and had run a Feng Shui shop and did Feng Shui audits for local celebrities before running into Nina.
The original heir hits the case from all possible fronts:
1. portrays Chan as a Feng Shui master and used ritualistic Feng Shui trick to dupe Nina out of her estate.
2. the will is forged
3. if the will is not forged, then Nina's mental condition are questionable at the time when the will was written
4. Nina's 2002 will was very elaborated, amended 5 times and was written in Chinese. Chan's alleged will is short, in English and has writing errors.
----
In terms of the court of public opinion, Chan loses. The public perceive him as greedy and stealing from charity, especially he was already paid HK$2800M (US$360M) by his own admission. Not to mention the moral implications that he started the affair 3 months after he had married his current wife.
--
This brings up a dilemma for FS expert witness. Most FS lineages have strict rules on who their students can serve. Here are some common "no service" groups:
--
-- non-filial persons
-- disloyal persons
-- gambling halls
-- brothels
-- immoral people
-- greedy people
-- mean people
-- rich but unkind people
-- shameless people
--
The western notion of justice assumes someone is innocent unless proven guilty. Chinese and most Asian countries have the opposite idea: you are guilty unless proven othewise. So it is easier to be FS expert witness in the west when your client has not yet been proven guilty.
--
The FS expert witness for Chan will be in a no-win situation. If winning the case, the local FS community and the public are likely to perceived him/her as helping Chan to grab money from charity. If losing the case, will there be more witness job or even local FS jobs coming?
--
Chan is smart to get someone from overseas instead of a local master who is likely to be biased.

Well, I'm going to re-price my courses, so that I can afford more peanuts... maybe it is easier to find a rich client.

The time has come--- Feng Shui Expert Witness!

From newspapers and TV soap operas, we see many expert witnesses of handwriting, dental, fire, psychology, electronics and so on, were hired to say "nice things" for their clients and nasty stuff for their adversaries in courts.
I ask myself, "When will Feng Shui people get a crack on this expert witness business?"
My prayer was answered today.
Today, Reuters has a report about the late Hong Kong tycoon Nina Wang's estate court fight:

In a nutshell, Nine Wang had willed her US$12 billion estate to charity in 2002. After she died of cancer in 2007, her secret lover Tony Chan, a married businessman and feng shui enthusiast, suddenly claims to have a 2006 will that grants him the sole beneficiary of Wang's estate.
Wang's orginal beneficiary, Chinachem Charitable Foundation, uses Feng Shui as one of the reasons to discredit Tony Chan in court. They hire Feng Shui experts to write testimonials to accuse "Chan of duping Wang out of her fortune by promising the tycoon eternal life through his feng shui services."
I envision one day that people will use Feng Shui defense/offense like people use the insanity defense today. This means more work opportunities for our Feng Shui graduates!
"Bad Feng Shui made me kill this SOB!."
"This guy had used Feng Shui trick to scam me out of $100!"
Feng Shui teachers, it's about time to work on a course for "Feng Shui Expert Witness".
